Dualies and Stick Swap

I have a 97 auto maxima se and was wondering roughly how much it would cost to put on dual exhaust and swap in a manual transmission

Re: Dualies and Stick Swap

5 speed conversion will cost you around $500 - $1500 depending on where you get your parts from ... hlh0501 was a pioneer and has a complete write up on his web site, it's the best

dual exhaust, quite a few maxima's have dual exhausts ... most were custom jobs. BUT, custommaxima.com is coming out with a bolt on dual exhaust, i don't know if it's available yet

does a maxima make enough back pressure to warrant having dualies?

No dual exaust is for looks. The conversion might be 1500 if you do it yourself.

my friend who is into ricers and all that **** (he has a civic) told me it would only cost around 300 for dual exhaust...also would this be harmful? I know that dualies on an I4 decrease hp and torque

why don't you just put on a dummy muffler and not hook it up. it'll only be the cost of the exhaust then

no I read somewhere that idle speed you don't hear anything but when you rev it it sounds almost like a nice v8 with flowmasters with not as much bass

As much as I would love for that to be so, it's not. Actually, I like the way my setup sounds better then A Mustang V8 with Flowmasters below 2000 rpm. It sounds unbelievably awesome. But the tone changes so much above 2k RPM it's not even funny. When I revv it high (around 4k or so) it sounds race like, but in no way muscle car like. I think the reason it sounds soo good below 2000rpm is becuase when mixed with a 3.0 V6, it emits a very unique burble.

Hooking a dummy muffler or pipe up is the gayest and riciest thing I have ever heard of. Get a camaro style muffler with 2 inlets and run a pipe around and actually make it functional. The camaro muffler is only 4" thick so it is completely invisible with some nice 3.5"+ tips.

As far as idle...it's loud. Whoever told you that you don't hear anything is retarded. It sounds the best at idle and revving below 2000rpm. I bet a maxima with true dual 3" straight pipes would sound AMAZING at idle. But when you accelerate you'd get the riciest, nastiest sound ever. I tried to keep as much of that awesome idle/low rpm revving sound without getting rice when getting in the higher RPM band. The comprimise was a 20" glasspack resonator in the b-pipe. It did a great job of cleaning up the rice throughout the powerband and deepened the tone. Here's my setup:

WSP 2.5" Y-pipe --> Stock cat (half blown) -->2.5" aluminized, pipe bent b-pipe w/20" glasspack resonator -->Flowmasters camaro 80-series (2 chambered) muffler -->2.25" aluminized pipe bent pipe hooked to the muffler's other outlet and running around the tire well out the other side of the bumper. When I floor it, it's all engine. It's IMPORTANT to get a resonator, becuase before I got that put on, all I could hear was my exhaust. The resonance at idle and cruising was also cut down with the resonator. I reccomend glasspack over turbo tube, becuase the turbo tube is really restrictive and doesn't deepen the tone like the glasspack - only quiets things down alot. And don't listen to the bad stuff that people say about glasspacks - they will last 4+ years before starting to wear away.

With the info provided about custommaxima's duals, it sounds to me that they are overpriced. Check out the GD forum for that thread and see my reply's. You could get a catback setup like mine for under $500. (pipes, muffler, resonator, labor). Custommaxima's aluminized kit would run you close to $1000 w/labor, the SS even more.

Duals are mainly for looks and sound. The looks and compliments I get are priceless, as is the steam that pours out of BOTH pipes on cold mornings. The extra pipe I have may be adding a little more torque, and it may be restricting a HP or 2. But I can live with +1-2tq and/or -1hp for the sheer beauty of the system.

i really doubt paying so much for just the look of dual exaust is worth it..if u r gonna do dual exaust then do it right. But don't expect to see huge power gains because your car really doesn't need the 2 pipes. And please do not put on a mellon shooter (big civic exaust) on your max...it's gonna sound like a revving lawn mower when u accelerate.

a maxima will never sound like that becuase its a v6. Some people would pay that muc.i did it because I like the look and it sound much better then my old exhaust. Some people add boku money on their systems. Do what you like because you like it, not what everyone likes it

How do you know? So if you say he DOESN'T know, that means you must know(because you are butting into this thread). So, can we have the answer(s)?

Hmm...if by a few months ago you mean like 13 months ago! Cause that's when I was researching about dualies.

Now look at me...i'm a 5spd...I have infinite wisdom on dualies. People often email me and I am willing to share all my knowledge..you know I contribute a lot to this board, but somehow it all gets foiled by my goofing around here and there. I deserve more credit damnet!
