Beginners Mods

Hey all!
With the 97 5spd Max I'm going to be purchasing in a few weeks, I was wondering were I should get started with quick, efficient performance mods; mostly for gas mileage and 0-60. I'm going to be doing 90% highway driving and about 1000 miles a week. Cone filter(pvcpipe?). Plugs(which brand) wires(brand?) larger TB? exhaust; which size? muffler (which brand) and while were at it...suspension, shocks, lowering springs (only 1in.) stillen body kit. PIAAs and I'm getting very anxious. I think that covers it and anything else I didn't say, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Might wanna start off with an intake, work your way to a y-pipe....skip the muffler unless your doing a full catback IMO....in which case you can get Apexi WS if you want quiet, Stillen/Greddy if you want abnoxious, or a custom...

Plugs: OEM is NGK Platinum's....About $10 a piece...you can subsitute NGK Coppers but youll have to change em every 30k, instead of 60k.....We use direct ignition as well, no need for distrubter wires/caps, etc......just coil packs that seem to fail alot

Larger TB: no

Exhaust: anything from 2.25" to 2.5" inch for the b-pipe to muffler of your choice....Budget/Warpspeed/Stillen/Cattman Y-pipe (From inexpensive to expensive), and a hi flo cat of your choice Random Tech/Carsound.

Suspension: Sprints/H+R's/B+M's/Maxspeeds/Eibachs/Intrax/Coilovers.....many choices....KYB AGX seems to be the strut/shock of choice, also cost a pretty penny ($350 for all 4)

and please search

and I'll be happy to tell you. But for awhile I'll be doing alot a question asking to get up to speed. BTW I just went over the FAQs. Got some helpful links and stuff but Jamsun was very helpful and I didn't need to research at all. (boy, I'm lazy) Thanks everyone!

You should also check the FAQ's in the 5th Gen forum as well. Lot's of good info in there that can be applied to all Max's.

Don't call it a JAP car. There are many Asians that are Org members, that's all I will say about that. As for the newbie thing, don't take it personally I used to get heat for asking questons without searching first. I'm just returning the favor.

Let me make sure I understand you right....you want performance mods AND get better gas mileage? I've found out that after every "breathing" mod I've put on, I've ended driving a bit more aggressively & generally delay my shifts until a higher rpm. Even with just a JWT pop charger, it's hard to drive like before! (Maybe that's just MY weakness )

If it's fuel efficiency you're really after, you might want to just leave your air intake, y-pipe, etc. as-is.

Just my $0.02.

Re: you need work

There was absolutely no harm or prejudice intended. Sorry if I came across the wrong way or offended anyone. I actually wish most of the high performance cars made in Japan were over here in the US. i.e. 240SX, Evo VII and etc. I think the US auto makers don't make enough high performance cars. Oh, and thanks for the favor :-)

On to Max stuff; I was wondering if it would better for me to get an auto or 5spd. I've been thinking 5spd the whole time; how much does the auto "hurt" the performance compared to the 5spd?

As for what StygianMax said about fuel efficiency....
I'd like to repeat I'm going to be driving about 1000 miles a week with it 90% highway cruising. So I think every lil bit would help in the long run. i.e. (I'm gonna get made fun of) I rigged a $5 dryer duct to the airintake of my current car and increased gas mileage by 3-4 mpg on the trip from Florida to Pa. It paid for itself. LOL@me.
Although I think I drive more aggressively with a 5spd.

Once again thanks for all the comments!

Well they say 5sp are faster, but I can't verify that as i've never driven a Auto Max. But from my own experience, I love the feel of being able to let it rev high and change the gears when i want to and not when the car wants to. Just seems more fun to me. Besides, when your battery dies you can push start it

You can do the same thing with a 4th or 5th gen Max. Do a search in the 5th gen forum for OSCAI. Also in the FAQ thread there..

I've heard it helps with performance. Not sure about mileage.

Auto is considerably slower IMO...im highly considering trading in my max after racing a 5spd....he beat me by 1 1/2 cars on the highway....i had an intake and ypipe and half his miles, and he just had an intake....it was pretty bad
