if you mean the big bottom bolt; you need a wrench on one sige, and probably a wratchet on the other, going in opposite directions. I've done it a million times. One side is 17mm I think.

No, what i mean is the nut all the way on the top, connecting to the tip of the rod of the shock. If you have a sway bar, there are 3 nuts see, but its the actual nut in between all the them in the smaller circle that holds everything else in place.

You should loosen it before you remove it. If its still installed and it turns the shaft the only way I know is the vice grips, try and protect the shaft and put the vice grips up as high as you can so if you do mark the shaft odds are it will never go down far enough to hit that mark and possibly damage the seals.

Good Luck

yeah i had mad issues removing that bolt. the first time i did it, i had air tools, so it was no problem.

the second time i did it at home, using a regular socket, and one side came off just fine (the shock assembly was still in the car, bolted down and all). the other side, the whole shaft was spinning, and theres nothing i can do about it to this day. if you figure out a good way to take it off, let me know

Clean the shaft with alcohol. Cut up a new bicycle innertube into strips about 1" wide or so and 1' long or so. Clean the talc off the rubber if it has any. Wrap a couple of the strips around the shaft in the opposite direction you're going to be turning the nut (you'll see what I mean). Get a pair of little vice grips in there (that's the ***** part) and clamp them on the thick rubber. Hold the grips. Have someone else remove the nut.

Air tools do make life easier.....

yeah but it might not be so easy to find a shop willing to do it. me and my friend went to several places to try to get the bolt off from his jetta suspension, and no one would do it because they either wanted to do the whole job , or do nothing at all

are you talking about the rear?

u'll need a vise grip to hold the tip of the rod (the flat part) while u loosen up the nut.

the whole rod spins? or jus the top hat? the part that has the word "OUT" on it. i didn't know the whole rod spins, cus when i installed the AGX, my bro held the top hat with his hands while i tightened that nut.

if it's jus the top hat that spins have someone hold it while u loosen the nut. or put the strut back on the car in it's original place but dont screw it in and loosen the nut from there while it's held in place
