My transmission just died today i have a 98 max. I was wondering which is the best transmission to put on my max. Do anyone have a hookup for the transmission or installation? Any suggestion is helpful so please help me and thank you in advance. Need my max working for commuting to school and work. P.S. how much money do i need to borrow to spend to fix my transmission problem?

thats interesting.. my cousin's just blew too.. we are probalby replacing it this weekend..
i am guessing tranny will be $650...
and if you go to a shop they will probably charge you $600 labor...
so you are looking at $1300

locking refers to the torque converter in an auto transmission. The torque converter electronically "locks" into the overdrive gear to save gas mileage, for example.
It's an electronic solenoid basically that controls the torque converter to save gas; it won't allow the TC to slip when gentle accelleration is applied. All about fuel economy (blah)!

I am selling a transmission, but it is a 5 speed from a 97 non-LSD...let me know and it is in the FS 4th Gen thread under 5 speed conversion parts...

"Why is a Limited Slip Differential(LSD) better than an open differential? A LSD is better because it allows power to be applied to the ground in a more controlled fashion. In an open differential setup if one wheel begins to spin faster than the other, more power is transferred to the wheel that is spinning fastest (this is a problem when you dump the clutch for instance.. because you spin one wheel faster, more power is transferred to that wheel, making it spin even faster which transfers even more power spinning it faster... this perpetial cycle only ends when the spinning wheel decides to grip the pavement). This is fine for the average driver because they won't worry about how quickly and affectivly his or her engine will get it's power to the ground. For sports car drivers, this matters. A LSD (in its various forms that I will discuss later) wheel try to keep the power output of each wheel balanced equally, ie if one wheel begins to spin faster than the other, more power is transferred to the wheel that is spinning slowest. Now that the differential difference is as clear as mud we can move on.
How does a Viscous LSD(VLSD) work? each output shaft of the differential is tied together by a device known as a viscous coupling. This is basically two slotted discs that have a silicon fluid between them. If the discs are rotated at a speed that varies relative to each other this produces friction which heats the silicon fluid up. The silicon becomes more viscous as it's temprature rises. There will be a point where the silicon will become viscous enough to hold the two discs together (this is why the discs are slotted, it is so the silicon will have something to grip to)." Yes, look at car-parts.com for a A.T. Locking differential transmission for either a Maxima or a Infiniti I30, but know might be a good time for a 5speed swap if you want. Do a search for 5speed conversion if you want some info. on it.
