Accordiian? (OEM Intake)

I was wondering what the accordian that is on the stock air intake system is for...what does it do and if i were to remove it would it make a difference if i replaced it with straight rubber.(the accordian i am talking about is the piece of rubber that hooks up to the throttle body) Can some please let me know.

Thanks,
Nick

It's a resonator, what people call a midpipe on the org is just that, a piece of tubing that makes it a "straight midpipe"... doing so increases sound, and supposedly gains you a better low end.. Having used both, I think that the increase in noise is not worth the 1 hp or so that u gain from taking out the accordian piece.

I think he is wondering about just the accordian section, not the the square resanator box.
The accordian section is just there to allow flex. It does create a a little turbulance. It is repaced with a smooth rubbercoupling if a Frankencar mid-pipe or a CAI is installed. On my set up, the midpipe goes through the accorian section and bumps up against the TB.
I don't know what intake set up you have, but it can be replaced or negated in a few different applications.
