My car hasnt run this well over a year
So latley i have had major issues starting my car. I finally brought it into my guy and had him look at it. My battery was just messed up beyond belief. It was the orginal batt from 96! He said that because it didnt have enough juice it was making the starter work extra hard and therfore killed the starter. (I had just replaced it 2 months ago) So i got a new battery and starter (starter was under warent still) and my car feels like it is brand new. I love my max again... and someone is coming to probably buy it tomorrow

A note to you 4th geners: Save yourself money and get a new battery!! I had to buy a new starter (300) earlier and that may have been avoided if i had a good battery!

My 96 Se still has the factory battery. I was noticing harder starting when the cold weather rolled around. I checked my battery while the car was off and the voltage was 12.2 (a bit low, should be 12.6). I decided to pop the fill holes open and sure enough, I was very low on water. I added water and put a charger on the battery (set to "trickle"). The battery came back to around 12.5-12.6 volts. It's been three now and my car starts perfectly. With the car at idle I'm looking at ~13.4 volts (pretty normal).
My question is this. How in the world can an OEM battery last so much longer than an aftermarket battery? I'm running a battery that's nearly 7 years old and an aftermarket battery is lucky to go 4 years.

$300 for a brand new starter is actually cheap (if OEM, that's even cheaper). But I don't think anyone will buy a brand new OEM one these days.
$100 for a starter is also cheap, but, those are the re-manufacture ones, like 95% of the starters we buy theses days. Depend on the quality, even for the used one, some can be $300.
