I need a short shifter badly. The stock throw is way too long and shifting is becoming a chore!?!? If you have a short shifter how much did you pay, and what make do make do you have. I know "Steallin" sells one and I've also heard the Pacesetter makes one. What are the advantages and disadvantages of one to the other. I just want the best but cant afford to make a mistake. Any info will help.

I cant really help ya out as far as getting one. But i can tell you its the best mod i did to my car so far. Takes a lot less effort and allows you to stay in your power range. If anyone was thinking about their next cheap mod.

GET A SHORT SHIFTER!

Courtesy

I heard the courtesy is adjustable and cheap I got a quote as follows:
85.00 for the Courtesy Nissan short Shifter
179.00 for the SMZ
215.00 for the Stillen

I was about to buy one, but I thought I'd buy and install my shifter, b-pipe, 2000 I30 muffler, and possibly an rt cat all at the same time.

stillen is a whole unit, the others is a shift rod mounted on your stock mount. it use the same stock rubber unit. (cheaper price). i have the stillen unit, very crisp and firm. never try the others so i wouldn't know how they feel. neither way this is a must do mod.

I know a guy with a Stillen short throw shifter... It rattles a lot around the 3000RPM point. Don't know if its just something with his car or just a general attribute of the unit.

My guess is since the shifter **** and the rod are lighter, they can damp vibrations as much...

As far as it being a physical chore >> the short throw shifter basically is a shorter lever arm on the actuator. So since the lever arm is shorter, it actually takes more force to move the shifter through the gates as compared to a "long throw" shifter >>> and your movements should have to be more precise as you go across the 1-2, 3-4, 5-R gates.

Hope this helps...

Rattling probably is coming in one of two places...

First: the catalytic heat shield is touching the bottom of the STS. Easily fixed by banging a dent into the heat shield...

Second: An aftermarket shift **** that doesn't screw into the STS sometimes rattle if a rubber piece isn't fitted properly between the **** and STS... my MOMO had that problem...

I haven't felt any other types of STS in the Maxima but I love my Stillen unit...

I have the Pacesetter unit. I think it is great. Why pay 200 when you can have the same thing for 70 from custommaxima.com...the throw is now way shorter than my friends rsx and the pacesetter can be adjusted even shorter...that is my idea....

Get the Pacesetter, can't beat it for the price. You can adjust it from 0 to all the way to 89% shorter throws. I have it set at just over 50%. However 50% is the best setting because you wont wear out the synchros. Also a lot of people will tell you that you have to shave the ball down a little for it to fit, its bs. The only reason someone might have a hard time shifting it that they tightened the bolt too much that connects the shifter and the pipe that goes to the tranny (its black you will see it when you get under the car).

since no one could answer my last question, i am still wondering about the cutting the stock shifter instead of STS.

I believe if you cut the stock shifter it will only shorten the hieght, not the throw between gears. Im sure if you did cut it a universal **** would fit ..since it does not screw on but uses scews on the sides to kinda clamp it on.

i cut my stock shifter and it does cut down on the height but not the throw... so i bought the B&M sts which is excellent quality (nothing less expected) no problems at all like others have had with the other brands... and it is about as short in height as my cut shifter... the throw isn't adjustable so it might be as hort as a stillen but i can shift moving just my wrist and i am not a big guy.
