225/45/17s or 235/45/17s for 5th Gen Rims

I'm thinking the 225s are the way to go, but does anyone have the 235s? I'm concerned with the radius being to much bigger than my stock 16s at this point with the 235s, but I just want it to look good and handle good, too.

Any help is appreciated.

I went a little bigger at 225/50/17.

That's what's on the 5th gen 17's, and I think it looks aggresive without being too small.

Are you on stock suspension?

Anyway, I did this combo on stock suspension. I like this size as well.

I'm running 235/45R17 on my 17X7 ASA LS5s and I have not problems. There's no tire bulgin. I've run 235/45s on other 17X7s in the past with no problems either. I called Sumitomo and asked if this was okay since their specs call for at least 7.5" rims with their 235/45. The tech quickly asked what kind of rims of was using and I told him ASAs built by BBS. He quickly responded, "no problems, you'll be fine".

so if he uses ASAs, he can use 235s....but he's not using ASAs

Yes, I'm not selling my soul for this car, I'm still in school, that's for the next one. But that is the exact reason that I got this tire size, because it doesn't leave tremendous gap, and looks good on a stock suspension.

I believe that 225/45-17 is the ideal tire size for the 5th Gen. wheels on a 4th Gen. Maxima. With the 225/50-17, the speedometer is off. I have the 225/50-17 because that's what came with my wheels, but when I need new tires, I'm definately going for the 225/45-17. Check out the tire size calculator. If you search for it, you'll find a link.

Actually, I think 235/45 matched up SLIGHTLY better than 225/45. I think the margin between 225/45 and stock and stock and 225/50 are respectively similar.

For speedo accuracy, 235/45/17 matches up better than 225/45/17. Still, I went with 225s because, the slightly smaller diameeter should mean it spins a wee bit faster, helping to make up for the heavier rims. Also, I don't want too wide a tire because I still want decent bad weather grip. In the dry, you want a really wide tire, in the wet/snow, you want a really thin tire. With 225, I feel a bit better with the improved dry weather grip and not so bad wet weather grip.

By the way, 215/40/17 makes for a really really thin sidewall. Your ride is probably as harsh as 18s, but you're running on 17s

if you are looking for width. Go with 245/45/17... and before you guys go flaming me with " are you stupid? or you cant do that!"
they will fit.(period)

a 245 series tire will fit on a 6.5" rim as well.

The standard tire size on the OEM 17"x7" wheel for the 2000+ Maxima is 225/50-17.

If you put these wheels with that size tire on a 4th Gen. Maxima, the speedometer will read 2.2% too slow.

If you put 225/45-17 tires on the wheels, the speedometer will then read 1.3% too fast.

Yes, if you put 235/45-17 tires on the wheels, the speedometer will only read 0.1% too slow, but most people (and shops) will say that 235's are not recommended for a 7" wide wheel.

Although 245's may fit, they certainly aren't recommended for a 7" wheel, and most shops probably won't even mount them for you.

The ideal size to go with is the 225/45-17. If you want improved handling, you can go with 235/45-17, but that is the maximum width that I would go on a 7" wide rim for safety reasons. The speedometer will be off less with the 235s.

You just have to decide whether or not you mind the speedo being off.

a few people on here say that the 50 will make speedometer a little inaccurate...by like 2 mph or something...i hadd my 2k1 rims with stock tires and had no problems with speedometers but...that rumor is floating out there...

why dont you just try to get a 215/50r17 tire. that way you get a tire that is very close to an oem tire hieght (215/55r16) it will work perfect on a 7 inch wheel. if you look you will see that there are a fair number of tires available in that size.

the 215/50r17 is %.6 taller and the speedo error will be less than .5mph@60 (it will read 60mph but your actual mph is 60.4mph)

I havn't had any problems. I got the height at 50 because I think it looks good on the fifth gen's without any suspension mods, and I got the 225 so that it would be wide enough for the occasional curb check while parking. It's worked so far, I think the tires fit the car, and I have had a couple of bumps into the curb with no scratches.

your speedo would appear to be functioning correctly, it would just be showing the wrong speed. of course it's only 2% or whatever, so no biggie.

Try this out:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

This really helped me to decide which size to put on 17x8 wheels. Just reset the stock tire size to your stock size in the left side and enter the size you are thinking about in the right side.

Hope this helps.

Ed, getting these ASA's $500.00 very good condition with michelin rubber.
from what i've seen out there.. i think these are a great buy.. they look much better in person than on a pic.

i just want to make sure they are 7.5 inch wide b4 i make the buy.. i would rather have the option to go with a wider tire later on.
