5 speed driving experience

hey people!....

Ok I've had my 5 speed for about a month now and I've pretty much gotten the hang of this manual stuff! (I think) but I wanted to run a couple of things by you people...for example...sometimes I find it hard to get the car into first gear...other times it just slides right in. Also...I know that I'm supposed to feel the tranny more now...but exactly how much should I be feeling thru the shifter? Any thoughts and opinions are welcome...

thanx

Ola

Well, to try to answer your questions...

I usually dont have a problem putting my car in first gear, but I have had problems putting it in reverse. Shouldnt be anything to be worried about.

I actually get a lot of vibration through the shifter when it's in gear. If it's a steady vibration, and not too much, you should be fine, but keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt get out of hand.

Question..........

When coming off the hiway in 5th and slowing down, or slowing down from anywhere for that matter, I shift it to neutral then come to a stop and engage when its time to go.....is this ok?

i have a SS as well and sometimes it won't go into reverse unless u throw it into another gear then u can go back to reverse.

with first gear, i have a problem most of the time downshifting to first when i'm at a roll of like 15-20 mph +. If i try to force it, it feels a little nasty and that's why i just keep it in neutral until i'm basically at a full stop or just keep it in second....incase i have to move when i'm at a minor roll....i odn't use first gear as much as i should....

most cars cant be shifted into 1st gear if your going mroe than 15 mph..so never try that.u will hear massive grinding...just use 2nd.. as for 1st gear from a complete stop...it should be pretty smooth..if not .if your have trouble with first from a stap try engaging cluth and shifting into 3rd then to 1st..should make it smoother..if its still stiff and you hear soem grinding every tiem u shift.have it checked out...i find reverse is the hardest gear to get into..this trick works for me everytime...before you shift into reverse...hold down cluth all the way and go shift into 4th first, then go to reverse...goes in every time smoothly..
as for stopping..i engine brake most of the time when to slow down from freeway speeds, but when i get to liek under 15 mph i put it in neutral and just use the brakes....from street speeds i just leave the car in whatever gear i was in and use brakes til about under 10-15 mph and shift to neutral and use brakes....my drivng habits may be weir.d.but they work for me..5 spd is the best..i wil never buy an automatic ever..3 cars all 5 spds...have fun...hoep this helps

That shouldn't cause any problems with your car. Actually... come to think of it... I've done the same thing for years and years, and it's not caused any problems at all.

The only reason you can't shift into first about 15 mph is because the synchro gears in the transmission. The syncho gears don't have enough time to sychronize all the gears to the same speed because the drive shaft is spinning very fast at 15 mph and above. It is probably better that you can't get into first gear while rolling because if you miss a down shift from 4th to 3rd and accidentally put it in 1st, you'll blow your engine. And that's no fun.

that shouldn't be bad for the car, however, i would downshift a couple gears before stopping off the highway.

nupe500: the only time i can't get into first is from a roll, unless i force it, which i don't do. i only engage first from a stop, and second for any low speeds. you shouldn't have any trouble getting into first if the car is at a complete stop. shifting through other gears is a temporary solution. i believe the vibrations on the shifter are normal as the shifter is directly connected to the transmission.
