Bought a 95 GXE last week from a auto wholesale place. (Great price btw!) Anyway - all I got was a copy of a key (i.e. - not an original) and it doesn't work that great - have to keep playing with it to get the car unlocked although it works fine in the ignition. I have talked to 2 Nissan dealers in NE FL and they say that the key codes aren't in the Nissan computers. The dealers said that the key codes might be a label behind the ashtray or in the glovebox - they arent in either place... Any ideas on how I can get the key codes for my car?

Key problems

I,m really surprised that your VIN number didn,t get you anywhere with the dealer. Perhaps the key you have was not filed/brushed/cleaned up properly and it just sticks or catches when you try to use it.

If you don't have the little code tag that came with the car, which tells what the dealer how to key the car, then I think the only way to get a new set made is to take the car to the dealer it was originally sold at. I am pretty sure they have record of that sort of thing, although this may be more trouble than it is worth. . . I know we had to do this with my old car when we needed a new key.

Just discussed this with my friend...

The dealer said that key codes are not kept on file if it was before 96.. meaning that they would have to do some searching to find it.. how.. I don't quite know yet. mine is a 96 and they punched mine right at the dealership.. however.. when I called a dealer to ask him about it cause I somehow locked my keys in my car, they acted like it wasn't possible to get keycodes... make sure you speak to someone well educated...
