I was wondering if flushing your engine is a good or bad idea. Today I will be trading in my Teg and coming home in a '96 Maxima. I was thinking of flushing the engine because the previous owner did not change their oil regularly. Should I flush or just change the oil & filter?

If you are unsure about previous care, I wouldn't flush it. Actually I would never use any flush stuff in my engine.

I would recommend Mobil 1, though.

I'd flush, get all the gunk out, and also while you're flushing check the throttle body and if necessary, clean that too w/ throttle body cleaner Welcome 2 the the world of MAXima!!!!!

I'm not too sure if I would by a Maxima that you knew did'nt have regular oil changes. I hope you got a good deal and the engine sounds super smooth. If it's rough, worry.

I pesonally would not flush it but maybe change the oil a few times like every 2000 miles or so to see if the oil comes out fairly clean. If it does then you are probably OK. Also if you do flush it and there was a lot of gunk on the sides of the inside of your engine, when draining the oil you may not be able to get all of the gunk out and then you take a chance in contaminating your oil pick up screen causing bad oil pressure. So unless you take off your oil pan then I,d say for get it.

Well not to scare the guy but let's say the oil gallies are partially clogged from lack of oil changes(using non-sythetic and the same oil filter) Changing the oil frequently once or twice would not do anything and the oil would still come out clean. Using quality oil and changing the oil frequently might EVENTUALLY help unclog the gallies though.

So, in conclusion?

Is it good or bad for the engine? It seems pretty thin and on the instructions it says to let it idle in your engine with the oil before draining? Good or bad?
