Someone brought this up before - downshifting manually to 2nd at 60mph is different than flooring it at 60 and automatically downshifting to 2nd. So the safest way to get to 2nd gear if you're already at 60 would be to floor it, wait until it downshifts, then stick the gear selector in the 2nd position and let off the gas to get back to 60mph...
I don't doubt that's true, but can you explain why that is?

Another question about downshifting manually - What about turning OD off while moving? In other words, downshifting from 4-3. Is this still bad for the transmission?

I do not know off-hand exactly why it's worse for the transmission to be manually downshifted. I have a friend who has recently rebuilt the tranny in his truck (1st time), so he may be able to help me out in explaining. Anyway, I can speculate as to why it's worse. When you force the auto to downshift, the torque converter is being strained as the clutch packs for the lower gear engage. It's not too smooth - and you might be willing to admit that it's a smoother downshift when you do it via the throttle vs via the gear selector. The tranny was designed to downshift itself when the electronics tell it the gas is sufficiently depressed (it's the positive acceleration that accompanies the automatic downshift that I think is what specifically marks the difference between the auto and manual downshift). And that downshift is a lot smoother. It was designed to do that. I know this is pretty vague...I can get more accurate information if you want.

On the 4-3 OD-off thing...4-3 would seem to be just as bad as a 3-2, but it depends on the speed. Just like doing a manual 3-2 at 60mph is bad, unclicking the OD at 125mph would be bad, too.

Please tell me you're not like my friend with his 93 Accord who puts it in 1st to take off fast...know what he says? It launches faster with the tranny in 1st. Dear God...how can we educate these people?

PREACH ON BROTHER

I had to drive around for 20 minutes to convice my friends that o/d does NOTHING for WOT driving! It only locks out 4th.....oh.....so yea...it accelerates faster duh

My friend drives his volvo this way. He has gears 1 2 3 and D. He says he goes quicker off the line this way, but I haven't really seen him do it.
