TPS Clicking??

I have started to hear some clicking from my TPS sensor during IDLE... is that normal? I have had a lot of problems with car stalling and such.... I posted a thread here during the holidays and no-one responded about it.... maybe u guys were actually with your families and not under the hood for once.

This was my original post....any help is appreciated...Thanks.

I have had this problem with this car starting at about 34k/miles since purchasing it new in Nov/96. Its a 1997 SE, auto.

Here's the skinny:

When coming to a stop, the car will shut off. (i have the shift to neutral/restart move down pat) This doesnt happen all the time, but at least 3/4 times a week. Sometimes when coming to a stop i can see the tach drop and then the engine will catch itself and swing the rpms up and then level out at idle. Also, the car exhibits the same behaviour when shifting the automatic a lot, like when pulling in and out of tight parking spaces.....

Also, sometimes when i try to start the car....it will just turn and not fire....or it will sound like it is trying to fire at the wrong time.... Usually will start after the second or third attempt though.

Things i have done to remedy this...:

-Tune up
-Cleaned the throttle body
-Changed PCV Valve

Note: I took the car to Nissan dealership shortly before the warranty ran out....they said they took care of the problem.... from what I can see... they ran a wire from the black wire on the harness for the mass air sensor and ran it to the engine block and grounded it there......

Re: TPS Clicking??

You sure it is the TPS that is ticking and not the IACV? There was a post a few month or two ago about a ticking IACV and idle problems... corrected by replacing the IACV.

In any case, it strikes me as odd that the dealer would rig something up for warrantee work. If there is a problem with the electrical harness, in my book, if it's under warrantee, the harness should be replaced.

There are procedures to test your TPS and your IACV. Maybe do a search or look in Haynes/Chilton's manuals.

Re: Re: TPS Clicking??

I think you were right in saying that it was probably the IACV.

Either way... I removed the TB, TPS, and IACV yesterday and cleaned them. Boy were they junked up pretty good. I disassembled the IACV completely and cleaned the inside too.... lets just say that they arent dark black anymore...

Havent driven much yet, but hopefully this fixes my stalling when coming to a stop problem.

Thanks for the input boss.
