Bad synchros or something else?

Car is a 1995 5 speed with 105k miles. ACT clutch was installed about a month ago and I installed Redline transmission fluid this morning. On to the problem: starting last night when putting the car into or removing it from 3rd and 4th gear, a grinding can be felt through the shifter. It is also very hard to get into these gears occasionally. I installed the redline this morning to try and help the problem but it didn't seem to do anything. The problem is not as bad when the car is moving as when I am at a dead stop. It does it if the clutch is engaged or disengaged, car is on or car is off. I suspect the synchros for 3rd and 4th but I wanted everyones opinions. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Also if you could tell me the average cost to repair this I would be grateful.

Thanks
Ian

if it is the synchros, try double clutching and see what happens.
that brings the transmission up to speed and puts less wear on the synchros.

A syncro doesn't help you get in gear when the car is at a dead stop. Nothing is moving, so nothing gets syncronized.

There is a problem with your tranny, you might be looking at a tare down and rebuild to find it.

Reinforcing njmax's post, if it's doing it while the car is off, it's not the synchros that are foul.

How do you double clutch?
Drop out of gear to neutral, disengage clutch. Engage & blip the gas as to match the RPMs necessary for the shift, then shift into gear.

Re: Bad synchros or something else?

I had similar sounds when i first purchased my 95 5spd, although they became progressively harsh. Ended up replacing entire tranny with an upgraded T-5 tranny. Upon examination of the case, it was a mess of metal shavings and gooky oil. dont know if this is related to your problem and i dont want to scare you, but it sounds a lot like it.

Looks like I will be taking a trip to the transmission shop. Thanks for the advice everyone. Also, where could I locate a transmission with the LSD? Might as well upgrade if I need a new transmission.

Thanks

CANADA baby!!!
our 5spds come with vlsd stock.
or you can get it off an I30.

about double clutching for the stock baby ,

instead of shifting from one gear to another, shift into neutral first, disengage the clutch, engage the clutch, shift into desired gear, match the revs of the new gear, and release the clutch.
this is more useful for downshifting.

this isnt double clutching. you want to rev match when you are in neutral, then put it into gear and releas the clutch. what you described is just a really complicated single clutch.

wow im a post *****

before you do anything, these are the symptoms of a short throw shifter, make sure u don;t have one.

Nope, I'm still using the stock shifter.
