What should I do about my brakes?

Hey guys,

I just started hearing noises coming from my brakes lately, and today my BRAKE light came on while I was driving. I guess the time has come for new brakes.

My dad went out and checked them and he says I only need pads, but I'm thinking about just buying the Stillen X-Drilled Rotors, SS Brakeslines, and Axxis Pads from Phuong. I told my dad that I wanted to get X-drilled rotors and he told me it's a waste of money, blah blah blah.

The only reason I want them so bad is because I'm getting 18" wheels this Spring and I don't want my ugly rusty brakes to be showing behind them.

Should I just go buy some pads for now and get the new brakes when I get the wheels, or should I just do it all right now?

Thanks,
-Nick

Do you have ABS? If not...

The squealing is not uncommon for the Maxima. If they brake light came on, it could be nothing more than a low brake fluid level or a misfunctioning handbrake. But you will definitely want new rotors with your 18"s, with my 17" then look horrible so with a larger wheel I could only imagine a larger aesthetic problem.

Well, I just decided to wait. I just went out and bought some cheap brake pads for now. I'll probably end up doing everything at once this spring - 18" wheels, drop (again), and brakes.

and yes I do have ABS. This isn't a squealing noise. I can't really describe it. It's like a minor metal rubbing metal noise. The brake fluid was fine last I checked, but I guess I better double check.

I'm kinda in the same boat... I went to the dealership to get an oil change/tune up and after the 27 point inspection the guy was trying to sell me on a $99 front brake service - telling me that my front brakes had 10% life left in em and if I didn't change them by the weekend they would go out on me.

It's been about 2 weeks since the oil change and my brakes still seem ok, my brake light has yet to come on as well. My pads are also the only piece that needs to be replaced however I'm the type of person who just likes to go all out on a particular mod I guess. Or maybe just the feeling of having new stuff

I've been shopping around to find the best deal and Phuongs looks to be the only one out there at the moment - $tealin rotors are kinda expensive... but they are probably worth the money. There were a couple attempts at a group deal on brembos but nothing has come of them yet.

Re: What should I do about my brakes?

I paid $100 for new (Nissan)pads on the front. It's more money than aftermarket pads, but they really last much longer.

I was also considering getting everything from Phuong except the rotors, and trying to get on on the Brembo X-drilled/Slotted Rotors Group Deal, but it seems there is no interest. Well, I'm gonna hold off on brakes for now, but I plan to do some serious spending this spring!

I would get the STILLEN X's now while you are doing the rest of the brakes, it just makes sense doing it all at once.. The STILLEN X's are going to look great with 18's

Good Luck,
