A similar topic was previously discussed. Just depress the overdrive button for similar "engine braking" without risking neutral over revving.

Hey, I do the same thing too, it makes you think you stop faster cuz @ low speeds you do cuz the engine isn't engaged therefore is not pushing you slightly @ idle.

I do this when I see a fresh red light and I know that I will have to stop no matter what. Also, if I am sitting at a stop light I always shift to neutral and pop in to D when it is green.

If an auto keeps it in gear while slowing, it will take slighty (maybe a few feet) longer to stop since you havce some HP still trying to drive the wheels and in essence fighting the brakes. In a manual, when you stop, you push in the clutch and don;t have the engine/brake fight. Also, the auto will coast longer than a manual will at higher speeds (over 30-40) since the maual has lower gearing and will actually stay in the gear you select. therefore if your doing 35 in 3rd and let off the gas in a 5 speed you will slow alot faster than an auto would at the same speed.
