max is freaking out

i have a 97'SE, mods are in sig. on occasion ( a couple times a day) i my idols really high, like im talking 1100 in R,D,1,2 and in neutral or park it goes upto anywhere form 1800-2200 and when i am driving my car wont decelerate unless i apply brake, because the rmp holds at a constant high, and you could imagine, how much of a pain it is to brake to a stop when your idol wont go below 1100. i think this is the cause of my super sh*tty gas miliage. any ideas anyone, please i have had this problem for like 4 months.

it happens randomly here and there a couple times a day

Have you checked the computer for codes?

Sounds like one of your sensors is misbehaving.

Or maybe you have a vacuum leak of some sort?
