Axles are broken on the Max

My axles are deffinatly messed up! I got a pair of axles already lined up to buy for cheap. But before I get them I want a couple of q's answered. I am getting two or three noises for the tires or around them. First the "click-click-click", then a hissing noise when the car is going at around 30 mph and above, and then sometimes it sounds like something is rubbing against something moving. Do all of these noises come from the axles being busted? Second q is how much will a shop charge to put them on? I could put them on with some help from some fellow max owners but it might be a big job. Some help please.

Click click click = Your axels CV joints are gone.

Hisssssing could be your brake pads.

You also want to check into the wheel bearings... sounds like their symptoms too, I'd get an opinion from like 3 different tire/suspension shops and then take whatever they say with a grain of salt. If your driveshafts/axles are the problem, you can replace them yourself - it is not hard - I can give you a rundown of it, or check my 5spd conversion page

Good luck!

If you have a line on some "cheap" axles, you'll probably end up replacing them within a year anyway.

I (and most of the ORG) recommend getting new axles from www.raxles.com

They use all new joints with precision fit boots and Amsoil synthetic grease. They have good prices and great service.

Is this noise like a roaring noise that gets worse when turning left or right? If so it is your bearings.

No the noise sounds like the brake pads I think. The sound is more like "tsss- Tsss- tsss-" and sometime becomes contant but when I tap the brake it goes away.

Sounds like warped rotors.......I can help ya out with replacing the axles... I replaced both about a month ago.... It was a project, but definetely doable with little mechanical skills... Need like a 26mm or 28mm socket...not exactly sure which one, but get that for the axle nut...If you want some help, I can give ya my cell number for any questions you encounter along the way...

I am pretty sure it is not warped rotors because I have tried to stop really sudden and there is no vibration whatsoever. I am not sure though. Where are you located? The more hands the better so if you would want to help that would be super.

I got a rebuilt OEM axle (good as new) for $49.99 from Jockos. My car vibrated and clunked in turns and had all symptoms you describe minus the hissing. Labor for install was $100. for one axle-not too bad.

Wow - with 2 people it's a 20 minute job usually - With one person, maybe 30 minutes.

If you have a shop and a lift with air tools, you can do it in 15 minutes by yourself.

So this shop charged you $100 for 15 mins of labor? That sucks!

I thought it wasn't too bad. I had them bleed my brakes too but that was $20. so it costs only $80. Not too bad. Hell I'd pay you $80 to do that any day of the week and drink a beer and watch.

Dont worry Chris. I have the two sockets already to remove both axels. We can take car off that once you get the money for the axels.
