I have a bad rear strut, kinda. Yesterday i was driving and i started to hear a rattle from my driver side rear. It slowly got worse and eventually i heared a loud clang noise. I pulled over and crawled into the trunk to look at the upper part of the strut and the nut had come completey off the threaded part of the piston! It was laying next to it with the bushing and washer. I drove to auto zone to get a new nut(old one had the threads completly stripped out). I put the new nut on but it wont tighten down completly because the threads are all munched up and its making a lot of noise! . Is there any way to fix this, maybe a die or somthing to cut new threads or am i screwed and have to buy a new strut. Their kyb agx's and only like 5 mo. old. Any thoughts????

 

Take the shock out and bring it to a machine shop. They will rethread it for you.

 

Sounds like poor installation.

I'd take it back to the shop where you had it installed.

 

I contacted several machine shops and the reply from some was that the only way they could work on it would be to remove the entire piston out of the strut to rethread it,, wich would ruin the strut.
One place told me to go to a local bolt shop that he gave me the address to and get die and try to do it myself.
me and a buddy of mine installed them (hes a mechanic at Austin Infinity)so I know they were installed correctly. Plus I think if it was installed wrong i would have had a problem right away...not mo. later. I may have to just buy a new strut. sucks for me!

 

Sounds like the bolt was over torqued.
