Speed Sensor ???

My odometer and tripometer recently stopped working ( actually works for awhile, then stops working, works again, etc.) All other gauges work fine. From a previous post I was told...

"It is your vehicle speed sensor. I had the same symptoms as you, except my speedo also would not work. I checked the harness going to the vehicle speed sensor and it was secure and not loose. So, I got one from Ericdwong for $10.00, popped it in, and everything works now."

Problem(s): I can't find any info at all on a part called a speed sensor, I don't know who "ericdwong" is, I probably wouldn't recognize a speed sensor if it was staring me in the face, and I wouldn't know where to put it (no smart a.. comments please )

Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Wouldn't he get a CEL is the speed sensor wasn't working? If the check engine light isn't on, that's not his problem.

The odometer/tripometer problem started about a month ago. The CEL came on for the first time about a week ago. So...the problems could be related??? I guess this is good news (one problem instead of two). I did get receive some info about retreiving the CEL code. Will do that in the next day or two.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem and I cannot get my inspection. The CEL is on and I was told that the speed sensor needs to be replaced. Can someone please point me to some instructions to get this done? I have a 1997 Maxima GLE.
