Why does my ACT Chatter ??

Alright when I first got my ACT in it was bad even after it was broken in..now that I have a fidanza flywheel put in its less but still not totally gone from the picture...when I leave for school its not there but after the cars all warmed up and about 25 miles of driving its there...I definetly know how to drive stick and its not only when the rpms drop too low..even when I let it go at around 1300rpms it still does it on engadgment...maybe a spring, or just the sheer crabbing power of the clutch. Its not bad at all now with the flywheel but noticable

dude, you have it easy, my car chatters pretty hard on all starts with rpm lower than 2k.

i dont see why a lighter flywheel would help this either, it has less moving mass and less momentum and therefore is easier to for the clutch to grab which means more chatter. unless your old flywheel was not refinished before you installed the clutch.

the act is a VERY difficult clutch to drive, very small engagement point, very unforgiving of error, as many have learned, unforgiving on gears, but if used properly and its difficulties overlooked, it is a fantastic clutch.

you talking to me?

when i had my tranny rebuilt\act installed, i took the motor mounts and polyurethaned them, so no, they are not broke, wheel hop is not bad either and i idle fine. so no, mounts are good. just a rough clutch.

ACT is very explicit about preparing their products for use.
1) Flywheel MUST be resurfaced
2) Absolutely no oil/grease on the flywheel/clutch disc
3) Proper break in.

Cheat on any of these and you will probably get chatter.

I have one on my 3-gen VE30DE w/ a lightened flywheel. I window welded my motor mounts but they were okay from the get go. No chattering whatsoever. But I've never head any 3-gen guys complain about chatter either.

ok, i take back what i said.

i do get a BIT of chatter, but especially as the clutch warms up, it gets better. i had chatter to begin with, but i just went for a drive, and while i do have a SMALL bit of chatter, i think that at low RPM, when i let the clutch out without reving, the shaking i feel is low engine speed, NOT clutch related. i guess i was just thinking about what a difficult clutch the ACT was to drive, and in my mind i never really noticed the chatter getting better. i also looked at my poly mounts, and they look good as far as i can tell, no tearing at least. so, my guess is that the break in was not ideal, but not bad, and the clutch just grips really well.

it makes your car shimmy and shake when the clutch is partially engaged, very aggrevating and uncomfortable.

I did all my mounts with poly but the engine mount on the right side...Im gonna get to that one in the early summer though...as for chatter its not that bad but noticable...and I did break it in correctly, 500miles of easy easy driving, it wasnt an easy thing to do ( drive my car easy for 2-3 weeks) but I definetly did it correctly...the only other thing I can say if the amount of grip thats there, is enough to make it chatter alittle bit

Wow, I drive my ACT street like my original clutch. There's absolutely no diff. Maybe I have better technique than most people? Or maybe I ride the clutch too much. Haha. But seriously, I had mad chatter when I first got the clutch put in (me and maxtrax put it in). But after 1 week (400 street miles, not much highway) the clutch feels like the original. However, I haven't dropped the clutch yet...waiting for 1000miles before doing that. I have original flywheel resurfaced and cleaned everything with brake cleaner before re-installation.

Also, I don't use much gas when starting from a stop. I barely blip the gas and let the clutch out @ the same time, so by the time the clutch is fully released, I'm not on the gas. I get very smooth starts and minimal "ride" time. This also decreased the amount of chatter for the 1st week.

My mounts are already 1/2 gone. The car does jerk when I moderately let out the clutch w/more gas than necessary. I plan on putting poly on them, but not sure when...and I have no idea what poly to use! (Can someone email me and let me know? thurznite@altimas.net) Thanx!

My ACT chattered from DAY 1....all the way up until it got replaced a month ago as I am selling the car. Mine was installed properly and broken in properly. I thought it was the motor mounts, and replaced them with Poly mounts from cattman....but this only intensified the problem. I then put BRAND NEW stock mounts in, and the chatter was STILL there. I've come to the conclusion that the ACT clutch, if it's going to chatter, will do so regardless of what condition your engine mounts are in.
