With the help of the good folks on this board have finally concluded I have a bad speed sensor on my 96 speed. Now, all I need to do is find this sensor and replace it. Someone said: "its a black plug on top of your transmission".
1. Can anyone give me a more detailed description and/or where I can find this sensor?
2. Do you think NAPA or autozone would carry such a part or will I need to go to the dealer?
3. Is it difficult to replace?

I think that you will have to go to a dealer for this part.

To locate it, follow these instructions.

Locate your fuel filter. Now looking STRAIGHT at the fuel filter fron the front of your Max, the vehicle speed sensor is at a 7:00 o'clock position in relative to the fuel filter. It is located directly below your EGR valve on the back of your intake manifold. To remove it, unplug the harness and unscrew the one screw holding it in, it is a phillips head bolt that is also a 12mm head. Then, with some force, pull up and out to remove it.

(You don't have to remove the intake, but it would make it a lot easier if you have never located the vehicle speed sensor.)

Its nowhere near your tranny...its under the hood on the top of the right fenderwell...trust me its there and when you remove it your odometer doesnt work nor your mph which means no more mileage...you didnt hear this from me

 

How can I tell if I have a bad speed sensor? I think my gauges is gone bad because when I put gas in my car sometimes the needle stays at E. and I could just go around the block and I already add 2 miles. but replacing the speed sensor might help me out with some of my mileage problems.

 

Ummm, I don't know what you are talking about, but the speed sensor is located on/in the transmission, and protrudes out a little that a harness plugs in to. It is held in with one bolt/screw and it pulls out.

When the sensor goes bad, your odometer, tripometer, and most of the time speed quits working. My sensor actually split in two on the main shaft of the sensor.

 

I'll second that. I rebuilt my tranny too many times not to know where the speed sensor is.
