HELP IN North Carolina!
Anybody know any good honest mechanics in NC that can work on my tranny? I need new carrier (differential?) bearings....96 Max SE 5sp.
The job is way over my head!
Thanks

Did you bearings go out or did your tranny leak soo much oil the tranny got toasted ?? If your bearings toasted themselves then you will need more than just diff bearings, youll need syncros, and all the other 5 bearings...
What happens is that the bearings wear over time senging metal shavings in your tranny, once they get bad enough the bearings bust apart and chunks of the metal go around your tranny
It may be more practical to buy a rebuilt one or a used one on .org with little miles on it...or look for on with a locking diff.

Not locked up yet...
The mechanic said I have a 1 1/2 inch play in that side (drivers) and that it will go out anytime. He had to add 1.5 qts of tranny fluid so I believe the low fluid probably contributed to my problems...I am still driving it because I have nothing else! My local mechanic said that he has had 5 max's w/ 5sp in with tranny lockup b/c of the loose bearings...at first we were hoping that replacing the seals would fix it but when he saw the play...he recommended I get rid of it...but i planned on keeping this car until the wheels fell off! He usually works on hondas but is a nice guy...
The nissan dealership said that to redo the carrier bearings they still have to crack the tranny open which is why it costs so much... he said it was a 12 hr. job...should I go ahead and drop in a new clutch too? I have never replaced it...if i got a used tranny I would still need somebody to help put it in...

A place called furches automotive, on university parkway in winston-salem.
You should try posting in the Regional Maxima Groups forum, in the washington d.c area. (includes NC)
