found a max today that i really want---supposedly its carfax clean but could someone check for me

please help me i really want this car but am nervous

1998 max se 5spd ---- $8000
90,000 miles

black/black
sunroof
heated leather seats
bose
auto climate control
no ABS

engine compartment seemed pretty clean
front tires had a little life left
rear tires werent quite as bad

things found wrong:

inside:

little dirty
worn drivers seat
two worn/scratched/broken pieces of dash above stereo

outside:
dirty (nj winter)
no MAXIMA or SE or anything on the trunk (does this mean it was replaced?)
spoiler wobbles a little when closing (is this normal?)
rear bumper had many scuff marks
both mirros were pretty scrated/scuffed/ banged up
some nicks on rims (but ill prob add more)

i figure i could get the dash pieces and mirrors from a junkyard for cheap and maybe thro in some floor mats

i can live with the scuffed rear bumper and drivers seat

havent test driven it cause i cant drive a 5 spd

this is going to be a car to get me through 2.5 yrs of college and maybe a little more

is too much for 1998 and no ABS.

private party is 7500 for fair condition

i have been looking for several months now for the perfect car, and this is the closest ive come with same colors and options i want, mileage is a little on the high side, and i really dont care about ABS (never had a car with it)

 

I don't think $8,000 is a high price for a 5spd 98. I payed $6,000 for my '95 5 speed with 118,000 miles, but mine is in excellent condition so that takes the value up a little. It can take several months just to see one 4th Gen. Maxima with a 5 speed for sale under 10 grand, so I would get that car. It's up to you though. I have a new clutch going in soon, and I am relatively confident that my car will get me through my next 2-4 years of college with few problems.
Just take good care of it and do routine maintenance and it will sevre you well.

hmm, id say if you feel its worth it, then go for it. But i dont think you should get it. It seems to be not in good physical condition, so think about the motor....

I paid only 10K with 5YR/100K warranty on mine and mine had 69K miles. Interior mint, exterior mint...

you're willing to spend $8000 on a car, but can't go ahead and sign up for carfax which will cost you $25? it'll give you unlimited histories for a month or so.

definitely worth the small investment.

im just getting tired of paying for carfax, ive been looking at cars since august

 

carfax is a joke....i bought a 30 day membership when I bought my first used vehilce from a dealer, just to be safe...the price was too good to be true (turned out he was simply hurting for business). While I had the membership I checked a differnt car I owned and a few others for coworkers - three had known title problems. The three vehicles were 5 years old or less. One was an isurance claim, another had an odometer replacement stamp and the third was a salvage title....they all came up "clean"...had any of us used carfax before we bought these vehicles carfax would owe us money.

so, carfax doesn't garantee you a clean title...but at least you may get some compensation in the end if its not clean.

I had a dealer tell me that the carfax certification being clean added value to the blue book value...this should set off your BS meter. BOOK VALUES ASSUME A CLEAN AND CLEAR TITLE.

98 with 90K for $8000...seems a OK, not great, but OK for "rough condition" and the lack of options (especially abs)....but if its the best price so far, what can you do.

Did anyone else notice that the mileage only went up one mile from July 13, 2001 to August 27, 2001?

 

he didnt drive it, except that day to inspection or whatever?

 

I wouldnt get it just because It was a fleet vehicle. Ive seen some people beat the living crap out of company cars.

the fleet vehicle part was when it was at the first auction house so it was called fleet, then the place i bought it from got it from the auction

anyways i bought her anyway and i love her very much

started driving a 5spd very well for the first time and i love it

gotta drive from nj to nc back to school sunday (which is one reason i really needed a car) wish me luck
