Why do I only get 20 mpg?

Hey Guys:

I have a 97 SE Automatic with 86K miles on. New Knock Sensor, JWT air intake, and original rims. I did the transmission flush, fuel injector flush (the dealer cleaned them, or so they said), new spark plugs the whole 60k miles thing, and supposedly a new fuel filter, right? Well, I still get crappy MPG.

I drive about 80 MPH with 30% of city driving. But even when I drive like 90% highway I get 22mpg top. The best I ever got was like 25 MPG and that's because I put it in neutral going downhill for 50 miles

I'm I missing anything abvious, any sensor, should I rechange my fuel filter, Oxigen sensors, etc... I don't have any codes. And NO my overdrive is not off, or my e-brake pulled. But maybe one of my brakes is.

I want better MPG

I was running an old 02 sensor for awhile. I didn't know I needed one until my dyno day revealed I was running rich. So I put a new one in and it really cleaned up my exhaust and improved the mpg numbers. Dyno guys also said running that rich was robbing about 10 peak hp also.

Re: Why do I only get 20 mpg?

My milage has dropped like a rock this winter. I'm stock engine except for a budger Y, which was installed recently and doesn't seem to affect my milage. I'm getting around 20 now also, maybe 24 when all highway. I'll be looking at replies to this thread also.

It generally goes down 1-3 mpg in the winter, b/c of teh additives in the gas. If you've been having this issue since before wintertime, then maybe run a computer code check to see if it is your O2 sensor. I have 120K on my 95 5 speed and get 20-27 mpg depnding on how hard I drive it . But even at 90 mph with a lot of accel/decel I get 20+

I drive 80% highway and get 23-24 mpg average with Texaco or Amoco (93 premium), and just recently a Chevron station just moved near my house so I tried that (92 premium) and got 27 mpg .

So I guess the kind of gas makes a big difference, I'll see if I still get the same milage for the next fillup.

I used to get really good milage..now I only get about 21-22, probably becasue of the Oxygenated Gas they use for the winter...but I dont remember this bad of milage last winter ?? I used to never get below 25 and that was with a lot city driving too...I added all stuff that should free up weight and give me better milage, I guess it didnt

Me too.

I usually run between 19 & 23 mpg depending on how hard I drive.

It's a combination of winter gas & the very cold weather we've been having. In Toronto, I normally average approx 30mpg with brisk highway driving about 80% of the time, but this winter I've dropped down to 24mpg! I also noticed a drop as soon as I put on my new all-weather Nokian tires, so i'm suffering from a triple whammy

I've been keeping track of my mileage for quite some time...

...and I ALSO have $hitty gas mileage...I AVERAGE 18 mpg

I think I'm running rich...because my exhaust just doesn't smell right...

Is there an easy way to check how rich my car is running?

thanks!

Great answer.

I also have this problem. I get around 200 miles per fill-up(when warning light turns on), 100% city driving. I had this ever since I got the car. After I put on the APEXi it went up a bit. The exhaust does smell nasty too. I drive 2500 RPM or under 98% of the time, never go over 3500%(when an occasional ******* doesn't realize he just ran a stop sign and I feel like passing him up and cutting him off)...

I must be doing something different... I drive crappy. I always hit 4500 to 5000 rpm and I never get less than 25 mpg with my 95 SE 5 Spd

APEXi is the brand name of a filter that he put on.
VERY basically, more air = more power, so the car works less to
drive as it once did -- less work = less gas used...

easy to install...even for someone who's IQ is 180

Ahhh, no. APEXi WS cat-back exhaust, lost low-end but hothing major. MPG did go up a bit. I'm putting a homemade intake on this weekend so we'll see how that helps. Also, do they always change the oil filter when they change the oil. I know that might be it, but I don't hink it'll push me up to >370 miles per fill-up like I should be getting. Have no ECU codes either. Help. I hate spending $56 for 420 miles worth of gasoline...

It IS a great answer considering all the answers to his questions have been addressed here on .org already.

And the answer to his SPECIFIC question is in this THREAD. Something you also missed
