Takes 30-40 minutes. You need an 1 1/2 inch socket and good breaker bar to remove the axle nut, an 18mm and 19mm to remove the lower strut bolts, and a 19mm to remove the tie-rod nut, plus a tierod removal tool. Make sure you have a torque wrench and cotter keys to put everything back together correctly. It's an easy job, deffinetly wouldn't pay anyone to do it.

If the boots are completely ripped around on the outer cv boot, someone told me that you could take the ball bearing apart, clean all the grease out and clean the inside really well, then grease everything back up put it back together and put a new boot on. Is this true because mine are completely ripped around on both sides. I checked out the price on raxles.com for new axles, and they are really $$$. Also, I live in Hawaii and raxles quoted me $85 to ship. Thanks.

How long have your boots been ripped? Raxles should be $300, but they are really good quality, keep that in mind.

if u have any access to air tools... this is one of those jobs that it helps greatly to get that big bolt off at the end of your axle... job is an easy 30 mins flat then...

Thanks to all for the tips.

Do you have to drain the gear oil? I was reading http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/...andr-part1.htm and it mentioned it.

BTW I'm auto.

From my experience thus far, autos do not have to drain.

Autos dont HAVE to drain, but the fluid will spill out in pretty large quantities when everything is removed. I've replaced quite a few axles with my friends, so IM me if anyone needs help.

MY fluid didn't come out at all....found it kinda odd...anyway..you should go with Raxles..its around $300 vs. $1300 that Nissan wants. That boot replacement method works but rarely...if you leave on bit of dirt in there it is going to contiute to make it worse...I joint could already be damaged especially if its ripped all the way around. Get new axles, period.
