newbie help: buying a max

Hi, Im from England and over here trying to find anything out about a max is impossible. Ive been looking at lots of import cars and for what I have to spend I could have a prelude coupe or aerodeck, early s14 or a toyota camry etc. I have pretty much decided that the maxima is the best of the bunch and I am amazed at the equipment level. Im looking at 96-98 models, id rather have a lower mileage earlier car.

My first question is what do they drive like, its hard to tell what a car is like during a 20 minute test drive but it did have a simlar feel to a bmw 525, ive not really driven any other simlar cars. when you get used to the car does it feel more nimble, has anyonme managed to drift it? Being rear wheel drive do you have to be careful not to leave the road backwards?

I see that the car can do standing 100km in under 10 seconds which is pretty quick imo considering its an auto transmission and a heavy car. does anyone have anby other performance figures? 1/4 mile, 40-80 etc?

I wont be looking to do lots of mods straight away, its mainly going be an ice car cruiser, but can I expect a big increase from headers, exhaust and intake?

cheers for any help.

RWD????

I'm FIRST!!! YES!!

The Maxima is a FWD, that is front-wheel-drive, to the best of my knowledge

Are you sure you are looking at a Maxima? The Max is a four door car.
Yes it's performance #'s say otherwise, but the car has 4!

Possibly 300z or 240-280?

Guys- There isn't a RWD max anywhere else in the world is there?

fwd! i was told it is rwd but as i said they are very rare in the uk and hard to find anything about them. i only had a quick drive in a 2.0 and as I am not used to any luxury it was hard to feel anything.

here is a picture of a uk qx...

...am i in the correct forum?

The fact is is FF doesn't put me off as it is a great car for the money, in the uk nissan is seen as a boring car and so the cars are always cheap second hand. Until a few years ago all jap cars were seen as boring but a few marques such as subaru, lexus and honda are slowly shunning the image.

Back to the car; the performance figures seem slightly higher than quoted in the uk; a few people have told me that nissan under estimate their performance, but its hard to beleive everything you are told

I imagine 200horses throught the front wheels can wear the tyres pretty quick, how bad are they? Do you get any torque steeer?

A mid15 1/4 mile is really respectable for a large automatic car, sounds like fun! What does the car drive like? I imagine that the suspension is pretty lose on a stock car? What gas mileage can I expect on 98 octane fuel?

A32 chassis is the 4th gen (95-99) maxima. FWD, 3.0L engine.

The previous A31 chassis had a RWD counterpart with the RB20DET engine, but that never got to the USA. (FYI, for those who build models, I am getting close to finishing my A31 RB Cefiro! FINALLY!)

In the uk we have 95 and 98 ron fuel, 98 costs slightly more but a car with a knock sensor will return better perfomance and better milegae.

The only thigns worrying me about the max are the fuel economy and the gearbox. How likely are the boxes to fail?

been lookming at cars with 40000 to 80000 miles on the clock, what sort of age/mileage to these cars start to become unreliable?

In terms of reliability, I have never heard any complaints from a max owner, the engines are pretty much bulletproof. The gearbox, I yet to find a problem with, if you wan't transmission and gearbox issues buy a Mitsubishi.

Ive been told that there is a problem on 96-97 models where the autobox can fail at around 60k, something to do with bearings?

Strange that the car is cheaper to buy than a similar age/condition G20/P11 and is cheaper to insure despite being able to blow it away on all but the most bendy of roads.
