New Forum Member with questions...

Hello, I'm new to this forum and have a couple of questions I hope you can answer. I'm the proud owner of a 99' Maxima GXE (75,000mls) with some improvements (cosmetic). The cars service record is good having the usual service done at the intervals the manufacturer reccommends.
My service engine soon light came on a day ago and I'm wondering if I continue to drive it if I'll be compromising anything? Having been a long time Nissan owner I know there use to be a hidden switch that would allow you to reset the check engine light tucked under the dash somewhere.
Is this switch still around? If so, could you tell me where to find it as I do not own a tech manual. If Nissan did away with the switch, I guess I should bring it in to see if there are error codes. I had heard in the past that a loose gas cap could trigger the light. Perhaps the cap isn't tight enough, I'll be checking on that. If the cap is loose and I tighten it, will the service engine soon light shut off?
Thanks for any help on this, by the way I did do a search on this topic and couldn't find anything on the subject.
