Glass and Plastic Polish

Does anyone have any good sources (websites, companies) for glass polish and clear plastic polish. I went to my local Auto Parts store and they have neither. I have a lot of pitting in my windshield from highway rocks as well as a weird scrape where the drivers side bottom of the windshield wiper sweeps. It looks like someone let the wipers deteriorate and the metal started scratching the glass. So Naturally I want to get rid of it. Also, my headlights have a lot of pitting in them too (plastic).

Is there a product out there for the consumer that will fill in pits in glass? When the sun is directly ahead, the windshield is very difficult to see out of.

I don't know about the glass polish, but I've used Blue Magic Plastic Cleaner/Polisher on the plastic covering my gauge cluster and it worked very well. Had streaks all over it, looked "foggy". Now it's almost clear. It dries into a powder though, so if you have a 97 or earlier, cover up the space around the mileage reset stick, otherwise you'll get that in the gauge cluster. The stuff is supposedly great on headlights and all plastic in your car, but I've yet to try it out. Waiting for it to warm up before I detail the car again.

I also have a question about glass. Is it okay if I use Windex glass cleaner on my tinted windows? I washed my car recently and it left watermarks on my windows, and I was just wondering if it was okay to clean the inside of the windows too, where the tint is.

I don't see why not. Most glass cleaners like Windex are actually "glass and surface" cleaners. What you don't want to do is get the stuff between the glass and the tint, or the tint will come off. If you got a professional tint job done, then you should be able to ask the installers and they will tell you. If you did it yourself, read the box the tint came in. I've installed tint on my own cars before and have used windex with no problems. I've also used Windex on professionally installed tint with no problems as well, at least none that I noticed.

Anyone else have any links where I could order the glass/plastic polish?

When I got my windows tinted on my G20 the shop said that using windex on the tint itself (from the inside of the car) would damage the tint. Just use a damp rag to be on the safe side.

I heard the saem. They say because a lot of the Windex products have ammonia in it. Eagle 20/20 glass cleaner is supposed to be good because it doesn't have harmful stuff in it.

Don't know if it's true...it's just what I heard.

Thanks for the info. I bought the car with the tint already there, so I don't really know. Got it from an auction. It looks like a professional tint job, not one of those box ones, but there are little pockets of air, little slivers, that I noticed. Hope it's not too bad. I'll get darker tint when this starts failin me. Thanks again.

This plastic polish will work well w/ taillight lenses right? well i'm talking about the outer part... mine has been looking dull lately and i'd like to get it shiney again. Is meguires the recommended brand that most of you guys use for this? An other options... and where can i find it? Home Depot? thanks!

For plastic lenses (including gauge cluster, headlights, etc...) I've used Blue Magic Plastic Cleaner and Light Scratch Remover. It is very effective, but depending on the condition of the plastic, time consuming. It also adds protection from the elements. On the bottle, it recommends using their metal polish afterwards for a good shine. I just used the Meguiars Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish on my gauge cluster lens, and was unimpressed. Does not live up to my expectations coming from Meguiars. It does a good job on headlights, though. If the plastic is scratched and/or oxidized, I use 3M Body Repair Rubbing Compound, FINE Cut. It will remove 1500 grit and finer scratches very effectively. It is not too aggressive where it will make scratches. Also excellent for water spots, etc... on glass. I've used it on all of my glass, headlights, turn signals, clock cover, gauge cluster lens, brake lights, etc... It gets them perfectly clean and removes the fine scratches (swirls) from dirty towels, etc... A good wax on the plastic after helps seal them from oxidation, and makes them SHINE. As for pits in the windshield, every Nissan I've had (3 so far) has had windshields that are prone to pitting. Kind of a sand-blasted effect. The solution I came up with is simple replacement if it really causes glare. Nothing I've tried or a local glass shop could recommend could cure it.

The 3M has become my favorite based on the ease of excellent results compared to numerous others.

With our plastic (and tints), stay away from any ammonia based cleaners, armor-all type protectants, alcohol based cleaners (actually a TSB on that one), and general purpose cleaners. I find a slightly damp rag is very effective, and if needed, I use Eagle One 20/20 Automotive Glass Cleaner.
