Idle Problem after Throttle Body Cleaning

1995 Nissan Maxima 5spd

I just cleaned my throttle body over the weekend. I use the whole can, STP kind. Anyway, I thought it was suppose to help my idle but every time I come to a stop, my idle would jump to 2000 rpm before coming down to about 800 rpm. Is this normal, after a throttle body clean?

Before the cleaning, when I stop, the rpm never goes toward the 2000 rpm like now. Yes, when I come to a stop, I usually go into Neutral.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. I have a 95 5 spd. I converted to a CAI and cleaned the TB since I had all the parts off. Since that time when I press in the clutch the rpms stay at 1500 or so for 10 secs then fall back to 600-800 very weird.

thats weird, i cleaned all the TB, upper manifold and then re installed, after all i dont have that problem.

May be is:
1. check the IAC system(if you clean the TB you should clean the IAC valves)
2. check the power steering sensor, Air cond sensor(both are attached on the IAC valve, you can see purple, and pink sensor on it)
3. if this happen any time you put the car on N, maybe is some hose that you forgot to put after installation.

same problem here- come to a stop, rpm goes to 1500, then drops to 700 after about 3-5 seconds.

No problems here either. It doesn't say it on the can I have but am I supposed to empty the whole can into the TB or not. On the bottle it just says to open the plate and clean as far as my hand reaches...

On some cars when the TB is cleaned you allow so much more air to bypass the throttle plate that the idle increases and becomes more of a job for the IACV to control it.

My car did the same thing the first time I cleaned my TB. It was up near 1200 RPMs then it would settle down. I adjusted the idle stop screw to get the default plate position closed just a slight bit more. Were talking 1/2 turn at the most. It immediately solved my problem. The car has run perfect since.

I cleaned the TB just last weekend for the 2nd time. (~25K miles) The idle remained stable this time when I was finished. My fast idle is a bit high now, feels like I have cruise set in the morning when I first start driving. I'm going to turn the fast idle cam setting down about a full turn. Hopefully that will stop me from charging down the road at 40MPH when the TB is still cool and the fast idle plunger is active.

You guys running the throttle body bypass "mod"? If so, undo it.

So if one modified the plate itself then they should expect a similar idle problem and adjustment. Thanks.

I cleaned my TB last week and have noticed the same issue. When I first start the car the idle jumps up to 1500-1600 and settles back down slowly. Before the cleaning it stayed around 800 rpm. I haven't checked it at stop lights but I will tomorrow. What is the "idle stop screw"? Maybe I should try adjusting that.

Thats sounds normal, leave it alone. The start should kick you up initially. I had excessive idle hang time when I came to a stop. Compleletly different then when you start.

njmaxseltd,

I have that same 3-5 sec hang time at 1200 rpm after my TB cleaning. It does settle down to 650 after 3-5 sec. Will idle adjustment affect the 650? I don't want it to.
