what is the difference in a Infiniti and Maxima 5sp?

I am getting a little noise from my trans, and have decided to get a new one instead of rebuilding mine. Do the Infiniti I30 5 speeds have any attributes that the Max. 4th gen trans do not? Also are there any problems involved is installing a locking diff. trans where a non locking one was? No I did not search, I am at work and just ran in the office real quick to post this. Thanks ya'll

It is a low milage used trans and not a rebuild.

Nope totally wrong. None of the Infinti manual trannys feature LOCKING differentials. Not safe.

They have Viscous Limited Slip Differentials.

Or the newer ones might have Helical gear Limited slip differentials. But that probably won't fit into a 4-gen tranny.

Here is where I found the trans, and they offer a locking diff. Maybe this really does not exist, I don't know. If so will the non locking Diff. Trans they hae for $1300 have LSD? Is LSD not similar to a locking Diff?

I knew that the I30 5 speeds had VLSDs, but you mentiond some having HLSD. Was that on the 98-99 I30s?

Plurco, goto car-part.com, look for a 5 speed tranny from an I30. If you do that upgrade, you have to do an axle upgrade as well. Maybe just one or both, I don't remember clearly, but the axles from the VLSD trannies are slightly different from the Maxima ones. Also, Canadian 4th gen Maximas also had limited slip trannies.

Any Infiniti FWD 5-sp you can buy for the 4-gen is vlsd. HLSD wasn't offered in any FWD Nissan until the new 2k2 maxima came out. Plus it's only on the 6 sp trannies. "Maybe" they are offered on the Altima 5-sps???

Plurco, when the company says "locking" they mean LSD. But that's a technically wrong term.

the 5spd maxima's in canada have VLSD, if thats what you're looking for. im pretty sure its the same tranny as the I30.
my maxima comes with VLSD stock, so if you could find one similar to mine, i think you could drop the tranny in your own car.

so any Infiniti 5sp is gonna be VLSD correct? New Axles is a small price to pay, and besides the place I am getting the tranny does not even require an echange. So you guys think this is the way to go? BTW the reason for this is also because I am going Turbo this spring.

Locking is a term used by the auto industry to indicate any type of locking diff. ie LSD VLDS HLSD Limited Slip, Positraction etc etc

All wreckers and parts people use this terminology. All they are really trying to say is that its not just a regular open diff.

Its like tomorrow in Spanish it doesn't really mean tomorrow it means "JUST NOT TODAY".

Also like calling non Jim Wolfe intakes POP CHARGERS.

Another is FOGGER for a nitrous nozzle. This is a pure NOS term and all the other nitrous companies detest it when used in reference to their nozzles.

Geez I missed one, how about calling APEX Integrated, Apexi.

No not all I30 5-speeds have VSLD. It was optional on the "S" and "L" model and standard on the "T".

Interchangeable with maxima?

Are those VLSDs you people speak of interchangeable to fit into 4th gen maximas? I know its the same engine but is there enough room for them? Also what is the difference between the I30 differentials and the quaife LSD?

Canadian SE's come with VLSD as standard equipment. The only difference is one of the axles has to be changed.

Huge difference between the VLSD and the Quaife. Read up on it at Howstuffworks.

Quaife is much much better, but the VLSD is still a big improvement on the one-wheeler-peeler.
