all that extra plastic from the stock ram-air

Is all that extra plastic from the stock ram-air/cold-air scoop and the tubing beneath, necessary? The stock scoop really doesn't have any purpose that I can see, and it would add a lot of accessability if that was all gone. Can all this be removed up to the stock air box, where the filter sits? I am planning on getting a CAI or Frankencar, so should I wait until then?

I made my own intake and left the bottom of the air-box(long tube from front of car) on. Doesn't hurt and I got the torque I lost with the APEXi back...
