Engine swap in a 98 Maxima

I got a few questions for the 4th generation crowd. I know before I start this that on this board I am new, but that doesn't mean that I am 12 and stupid, but that I am converting from modifying a Honda to modyfing a Nissan. That said, I have got the opportunity to purchase a 98 Maxima body (no engine) but everything else is there. What my questions are: is it possible to do a legit engine swap into one of these bodies (meaning JDM, maybe sr20 or rb20 or 25). I know with the right amount of funds it is possible to do anything imaginable, but we are talking budget. I did some research off of the site on turboing and SC'ing one, but this car I am getting at a REAL good deal. When it comes to engine swaps I know a little, I have an H22A in an Accord (some should know this common Honda swap. My last question would be is this worth it or should I go a different route. Thanks for the input and happy modding........

Im not so sure about the sr20 or anything like that, but it's not too expencive to do a regular vq swap in one, and you can prolly find the engine in a totalled car in a junk yard for cheap.

I'm curious to know why you're thinking of putting an SR20DE into a Maxima...even if you're putting an SR20DET turbocharged version of the engine, I would think you'd probably have alot more torque and would be starting off with a lot more power with a pretty hot 3 Liter V6 than a 2 Liter in-line four.

I guess it depends on what you're trying to do. I'd love to hear more about your project, so please keep us posted.

Best of luck with the project!

I wouldnt bother with the SR20DET...
I mean going from a V6 to a I4 makes no sense what so ever. Nissan put the V6 in the car to compensate the HP to weight ratio.

Bleh im confusing myself. Even though the SR20DET has more HP and TQ than a stock VQ30, my bet is that when you put a SR20DET in this body that weights close to 4800lbs its gonna be like a lawn mower engine in a jet.

Get a new(used) VQ30DE and turn it into a VQ30DET.

That my $.02

Is it an auto or 5 sp?If it's a 5 sp then you can prolly get another vq30de and turbo or s/c.What kind of power are you actually want? Why you want to put a turbo I4 in a V6 body?Just my $.02

Re: Engine swap in a 98 Maxima

Geez, the VQ30DE is one of the best engines on the planet. Just get a used VQ engine and put that bad boy in there.

They have awesome torque, and you can mod the crap out of them with bolt-on's, SC's, custom turbo's, MEVI manifold, spray, etc. and they take a lickin and keep on tickin as long as they're tuned properly.

VQ baby!

I'm an ex-Honda guy myself, and I understand why swaps on Honda's are common - because the OE engine is never enough!

The Nissan VQ is a beast - no swap necessary!

That door sticker is the maximum wieght for the vehicle. It only wieghs around 3,300lbs. Add 1,400lbs of people/stereo and you have your max wieght that the car is designed for.

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for your replies and two cents. I never even thought about the SR being a 4 and the VQ being a 6, that just kinda slipped my mind. I been talking to the same guy that helped with my H22 swap and he said that if I could get the engine him and his crew would be more than helpful. I would like to try for the VQ35 if it will fit, but if not then I saw several 30's on e-bay for cheap, so who knows maybe Turbo or SC. Thanks for the help and expect to hear back from me with plenty of questions.
