CONSUMER REPORTS ADVISES USED CAR BUYERS TO IMMEDIATELY CHANGE THE OIL (WHICH I'VE DONE) AND TRANSMISSION FLUID. ANY THOUGHTS. IS THERE ANY CHANCE THAT CHANGING TRNS FLUID COULD BE HARMFUL?

THANKS

No, unless the car has like 100k miles and the transmission fluid has never been changed. Then it might not be a good idea to change it since you never know what's going on in an abused transmission like that. Maybe it needs the old broken down fluid to even run.

One more thing, posting IN CAPS is generally regarded as SHOUTING. It is generally more polite to post in lower case like this.

my car has 98K, but it's well cared for, the transmission fluid is red and seems to be in good condition. what makes you think the transmission has been abused? why would it need old broken down fluid to run???

Changing or exchanging the fluid-->>

you probably won't have any problems but flushing it if it's never been flushed after 100k miles maybe. But if it's at a 100k and you do nothing you will probably still lose your tranny so you maybe damned if you do but you are certainly damned if you don't.
