I got myself a set of red/clears for my '99 max, but I'm having a hell of a time getting my stock tails out. I undid the 4 bolts and disconnected all the wiring, and the damn thing won't budge. Is there something else I have to do, or is the black adhesive stuff just that strong? And if it is, how do I get the light out?

Heat up the adhesive with a hair dryer.

You just have to push HARD.

 

hmmmm, yeah, i guess the fact that it's like 30 degrees out isn't helping the situation, lol. I may have to break out the rubber mallet and whack it good.

 

the rubber mallet may break or damage the lense...can you go in a garage somewhere? you need a warm atmosphere...forcing it out w/out any heat will be costly....you need to heat up around the lense..then push out...heat,push,heat,push....

 

just takes a little streangth..its the adhesive thats holding it in once you have the bolts out

 

dont really have access to a garage, but i'm sure i can link together a couple extension cords and run a hair dryer out to my car.

after u do heat it up and start to take it off, be careful of that black tar-like substance that's holding the lens in place.. that sh|t is impossible to get off if u get it on the body of ur car.. trust me, i know.. i still have some of that crap on one of my lenses..

 

You can use citrus based cleaners on that goo on that lens. It will take it right off. I dunno about the goo on the body, the cleaner might be too strong for the paint of the car.

I went inside and used my foot Just push until it starts to give...you have to heat it up or wait for a really hot summer day to do it.

Once the lense starts to come out, instead of pulling it out all the way and have that black tar thingy stretch out and then fall onto your car;s body, I use some scissors and cut it neatly. That way it is uniform and will accept the tail light back with even sealant.

Also you may want somebody to catch the tail lens just incase you pop it out too fast.

 

i said the same thing on removing my tailights. Another tip, after heating up the tailights with a hairdryer, get a flathead screwdriver, and wedge it in the space (put a cloth around it first, so you don't damge paint of lens) and just wiggle it up and down. Do this on each side of the lens, then hit it with the heat again. It'll come off quicker.
