I'm pretty sure I know what he's talking about. Towards the front of the inside of the armrest compartment, there is a space about 1/4 from front to back and looks kind of like it can hold something like a 3x5 index card. I originally thought it was a good place to put things like insurance and registration cards, until I realized that my plastic insurance card holder is too big to fit in there. I still think that was the original intent, but the dimention are wrong to practically hold anything.

I still have my cup holder. Do you think that I can make as much money selling it as people have made selling red/clear tail lights? If people will pay close to $300. for tail lights my cup holder has to be worth $50.

It's supposed to be for parking passes, for opening gates/doors.
I use it for holding my papes. Usually it's Pure Hemps. This time around, I went with the Lion of Juda. Try buying those without a smile on your face
Gotta love the Friendly Stranger.

I said slot, with an "O". The "other" is often in the passenger seat, and I happen to know what goes in there.

I love some of the things that you guys came up with - lol. But phenry was the only one who was correct. It is there to accept a removable cupholder. The cupholder was only offered in '96.

Here is the answer to the console notch:
1996: The GLE edition added a 4-way power seat for the front passenger, which was also newly optional in the SE.
Also, a large cupholder was installed in the central console.
(But they don;t say they removed it in 1997)
1997: Maximas earned a facelift for 1997, led by a fresh front end with a different grille and brighter headlights. Rear ends wore new taillights and a redesigned trunk lid.
1998: Front side airbags are made available on SE and GLE versions of the Maxima.
1999: Available traction control was the main addition as Nissan's flagship headed into the final year of its current design. All models also got minor trim revisions and a standard anti-theft engine immobilizer. A redesigned, more powerful Maxima debuted in spring 1999, as an early 2000 model.
