99maxSE 5-spd or 98 240SX SE 5spd?
#5
I was in the same predicament, 97 240sx, 2door rwd 5 spd or 95 maxima auto ... went for the Maxima.
Never regretted it.
The KA24 engine is decent, but its origin was from a truck, not smooth like a VQ ...
But they are two completely different cars though ... if you want something sporty, small and RWD, go for the 240sx.
This forum is somewhat biased ... you should test drive both, see what you like and what fits your needs.

i love my max, but the 97-98 240sx has to be the sweetest looking car and one of the best platforms in the states, period! my wife has to wipe the drool off my chin whenever i see one out. plus, there's something about the sr20det swap that just makes it that much more precious...

Only if I could stick a turbo in the 240

I love my max because it fits my style.
I am also in a large 240sx club here in Ottawa and was infact driving a 1989 240sx sr20det swapped this evening. very fast..very fun to drive, one of the best cornering cars for the money.
What sucks is if we could get the cars from the states you looking at 7 grand US for a fully modded silvia pushing around 300 hp with around 20000 miles on it.
They are a dime a dozen in japan.
My suggestion is to think pratical and also think what car reflects your personality

I really loved the way the 97/98 240's look. I found a nice 98 the same time I found my 99 max. Both cars had the same miles, but the max came with a ton more goodies, and costed a bit more, but the fact that I have been driving an older max for 7 years put a maxima soul inside me. Reckon the 240 was slow as dog poop stock, it was fun to wag the tail around. The max at the time seemed like the better decision, but sadly I'm second guessing myself now, considering I have 2 max's now, and I do yearn for the sports car feel that the 99 max doesn't deliver.

I'm in the same position now. I'm either getting a Max or a 97-98 240SX. I am leaning towards the Max though because of the VQ. If I didn't live in Calif. where SR20DET swaps are illegal (actually they are illegal anywhere in the US) and having to smog every 2 yrs, I'd get the 240 in a heartbeat. Love those headlights!

I wish I could of found a 240SX when I was looking to buy a car. You have to way all attributes against each other and pick the ones that suit you. FWD vs RWD, 190HP vs 155HP, 4Dooor Sports Car vs sporty coupe, and so on. I believe the aftermarket may be little kinder to the Max if you are staying all-motor. The Max weighs a little over 3k lbs and the 240 is around 2800 lbs. Now that I think about it I'm kinda glad I got the Max. Oh well, if you like going sideways get the 240. Other than that you can turbo or put nitrous on either one.

guys this is kinda off topic but is there a chance the 240 may come back. i see the SE-R as entry level performance car and the 350z as the high end. i would love to see the 240 fill in the gap. i really dont want nissan spit out any more suv's lets focus on making cars, good cars. id hate to see nissan turn into ford or toyota.

i had a 240 before i crashed it. ka24 is loud. but if you looking into a sporty couple its a fun car. not a very fast but hella fun to drive. corners like a moe foe. but when'if u do ever spin out, the rwd makes you really spin out.im talking from experience. sr20det swap will cost you a lil more than a bolt on turbo for the KA. it will be plenty fast enough either way. sr20 has way more hp potential though if you gonna go all out beyond a turbo. if you drive freinds around a lot get the max. u like to turn hard on every turn possible get the 240.

I drove around a friend's 97 240 with the s13...black top I think...and a few extra bolt ons, 6-puck,....wow, that car was truly amazing, and with all that power in such a light-weight car, it seemed a little out of my control. Also, I find it very hard to do a motor swap on a car that's OBDII, so therefore, I would have to go with a turbo kit or something, and I figured I would enjoy having a boosted maxima more. Even though my max is more like the family transport...which royaly blows, at least it's a 5pd

specs for max 5 spd (stock)
0-60: 6.7-7.0
1/4: 14.8-15.2
specs for 240SX SE 5spd (stock
0-60: 8.0-8.2
1/4: 15.9-16.3
advantages of 240SX over maxima:
-RWD platform
-there are turbo kits available for the KA24
-SR20 availability with 225HP for a S14 blacktop, though you will probably top out at around 375-400 HP before you starting building up the motor
-RB25 availability with 250HP, a little more spendy but the install is similar besides the extra 2 cylinders. that and you can easily get 500 out of that block.
i'm switching to an S14 with an RB25 here shortly. i'm 22 and don't need 4 doors. choice is yours

I have both maxima and s14
I have a 95 maxima with all the bolt-ons + CF hood, stillen lip, wheels, nitrous, VB mod...etc...
It's just sitting in the garage now due to an accident, but I can tell you that my 240sx is much more fun to drive.
so far for my car I have the HKS Hiper Max 2 coilovers, and the Nissan Skyline R32 GTR brakes. All I have to say is that the potential for this car is unbelievable. I attended the Tokyo auto salon this year and let me tell you...the Silvias get madd props in japan. Now more and more companies in the US are supporting this car by importing more JDM parts and developing their own turbo upgrades for the SR and bolt on turbo kits for the KA.
I say go for the 240sx hands down!!
with a car that looks like this (body kit I'm ordering)...

http://www.autoimaging.com/gpsports/g4_s14k_rr_lg.jpg
why wouldn't you want one?
trust me, my brother has the S13 with the JDM coversion and a redtopSR, it's so agile and fun to drive, I will never go back to a sedan until I'm older or I need to.
Their is a company under development right now aimed specifically for the silvias, and most Nissan cars. They will import used parts directly from Japan for a low cost! that's correct...USED parts! In japan, you can pick up 4 Volk 17" volks for $900 and a full veilside body kit for a supra for like $200. All in excellent condition (I've seen them first hand) This company will be dealing directly with those companies and bring parts over for the US market!
Now...once again, why wouldn't you want a 240?
