Correct me if I'm wrong, but a ECU's programed performance will depend on the mods made to the car right. For example, programing on a car with a CAI and exhaust mod would be different than that for a car with no mods, right?

No change is needed

The factory Engine Control Unit will work quite well with those modifications.

I should be more specific...

What I'm trying to get at is this. A stock car would get a cetain ECU mod to boost performance. A moded car would get a different ECU mod to boost that performance, right? Can't the mod on the ECU specific to the car's intakes/exhaust/SC/no SC ?

I see no need for that unless the vendor specifically instructs you to do so.

When the Engine Control Module operates in closed loop mode it relies on signals from the Oxygen Sensors to control the fuel management system. Modifications such as intakes (CAI) and exhausts (Y-pipe, B-pipe, catalytic converter, etc.) enable the engine to "breathe" more freely. The stock ECM should have no difficulty in handling these mods.

A performance ECM might eliminate the speed limiter and also use more aggressive curves for Wide Open Throttle spark timing and fuel volumes. In my opinion intake and exhaust mods don't require a different ECM. An aftermarket ECM doesn't require intake and exhaust mods. However, you could make a good argument that optimum performance depends on both. The cost-benefit ratio diminishes as you climb the "modifications mountain". That last one horsepower costs an awful lot.

Owners of Maximas with multiple engine modifications report annoying problems such as repeated Check Engine Lights and driveability complaints (stalling, surging, hesitation). Dealer service departments are quick to blame the ECM because it is an "easy out" for them. They will charge you for the diagnostic time and send you out the door without any real repairs.

Thanks

That was what I was asking. I'm the type of persone that doesn't like to waiste my time or my money. I didn't want to partake an ECU upgrade first, and regret it later down the road with many mods.
