5spd ECu Question

I have a 97 GXE with the C&C package.

Converting to a 5spd soon.

Quesiton is - If I get a 95 5spd ECU and 95 5spd ECU Harness, will I get a CEL?

Did a search, but saw nothing about transferring ECU's from 95/96 - 97.

The harness on my '97 matched up perfect with a late '96 ECU. I did get the CEL after 3starts/50 mi though. Rumor has it replacing the rear 02 sensor with a 96 would solve that. But there's that wiring harness prob...

If I do a manual tranny swap, do I have to get a manual tranny ECU? or can I keep my auto ECU?

Yes, you can keep the Auto ECU, you'll just live with a constant Check Engine Light.

And not to be mean, next time, do a search or start your own thread! I hate thread hijacking.

Now - does anyone have an answer to the 95-97 ECU/Harness swap question?

I "think" you will get a CEL, but only dealing with one factor. On the 95/96 Maximas, we have an extra O2 sensor in the exhaust in the cat I think. If you get the 95 ECU, it will NOT see that O2 sensor and it will throw the CEL. Also, you don't need the actual ECU when changing from auto to manual, I know this because I don't have a CEL light and I have the manual ECU with the auto harness.

My opinion would be to try to find an ECU for your exact year and maybe month. Try www.car-part.com . Good luck Ian....

Get an ECU for the same as you car but a manual tranny one and it should get rid of the CEL. People have done that.

What?

You dont have to get a new ECU with the same car, only if your swapping engines not transmissions

95/96 is identical...97 is it's own...98 is it's own...99 is it's own...in each of these model..no major changes was done...but there were changes...obdi to obdii...pins on socket are setup differently...and stuff like that...so...although they are all virtually the same car...they are in fact different car...

well weren't their issue (cel) w/ an "ugraded" ecu 95/96 in a 97 car?? if this is true...would it not hold true that there would be issue (cel) w/ a 97 ecu in a 95/96 car??

Do you mean the ECU Harness????

If I could just swap out the ECU, and leave the harness, without a CEL - then that's even better!

Car-part.com doesn't have any 1997 GXE 5spd ECU's w/ Power Driver's Seat.....

I wonder if that even matters....The closest to my car is one at "12/96", GXE, MT.....$150.00

Yes, I meant the ECU harness....sorry

That 12/96 ECU is probably for a 97 vehicle, just the 97 was produced at that time. My car is a 96, but was manufactured in September of 95, go figure. BTW, that ECU is a GXE and will have a speed limiter, if that matters to you....

The speed limiter doesn't exist on the Maximas with the C&C Package (power Seat) - so that makes sense - looks like 0 Maximas are 5spd and have the C&C Package - or just they have none on car-part.com....

That explains the Power Seat issue.

(My car right now has no speed limiter, GXE, with C&C)

I wonder if an SE ECU would work better then?

i say the EASIEST thing to do is to just get the ecu wit the same year as your car. You guys that got CEL codes, what codes did u guys get?

Also, skeelo34 on here (converted his 96 GLE) and my 95 GLE took my 95 SE ECU that i bought from junkyard, installed it on his car and his CEL light came off. Its been over 3 months and it still hasnt come on, so its kind of confusing of what would match, but i'm like 90% confident the same year, and production date ECU will work with no CEL.

Like I'm going to trust an answer from you, Mr. "TT".

No, seriosuly, you're saying you took ECU "A" for a GLE out of the car, and put in ECU "B" from an SE, and got no code?

Good news.
