Doing engine mounts, have questions.

I'm planning on removing the mounts, removing ALL the rubber in them, keeping only the inner metal sleeve, and filling with 80 shore polyurethane.

Do you think it'll be too stiff? People were filling the gaps in new mounts with 80 shore. I'm thinking about going total 80 shore.

For those that have done mounts before, any hints or tips?

I didn't fill my own, but essentially you're making Place Racing polyurethane mounts. The major downside is the R&R time plus waiting for the polyurethane to harden.

I have mounts for sale if you need some.

I'm not worried about it. I'm going to borrow a super precise oven from my dad's lab (he's a lab tech for U of T) that is precise to within a .5 degree Celcius, and can go really low like room temperature, to up to 400 Celcius (practically broiling, lol). So I'll be able to cure them in a couple hours at about 100. Heck, I'll probably leave them in over night.

As for the R&R, I'm not worried about it. I've tackled bigger and badder projects. I'll just support the front of the car on stands, and support the engine/drivetrain with another stand while the mounts are in the engine. When you think about it, it's actually a very easy job if you remove the entire cross member, which I plan on doing. I figure it'll be about 1-2 hours removal, and about the same reinstall.

Sounds good. This is how I did it:

I'm not sure what strength polyurethane PR uses, but yours should come out very similiarly.

I didn't fill the mounts myself, because I didn't want any downtime on my car. I bought the mounts from sx7r, but I did install them myself

The sx7r ones are new stockers with the gaps filled right?

Re: Question

Stiffens up the motor mounts to reduce clutch chatter and wheel hop.

I filled my own with 80 shore A or B or whatever. I can't comment on
the difference between the homemade and PR versions as I've never had
PR mounts. However, I can say that the car shifts perfectly, idles
smoothly and transmits nearly no additional vibration to the cabin.
Heck, even dropping it into reverse or 1st makes you realize the
difference. With aggressive driving and shifting the differences just
become more readily apparent.

If you want all out performance at the expense of harshness and
vibration then fill them 100%. If you want a tremendous improvement
in shifting and smoothness then do it the homemade polly-filled way.
I'm hard pressed to believe it gets much better than what I have in
there right now, but it's possible. Be an innovator and try it out.
You'll be a little softer than the PR mounts if I recall Eric D.'s
write-up correctly.

Cheers,

JK
