99 SE water leak

This is my first access into this, so I am going to put this out there and see if anyone has a answer. I purchased a 99 SE a few weeks ago, love the car, but I have discovered a water leak into the trunk. I live in So. Cal. so we don't get much rain. Last week it rained for a few days and i had a couple of inches of water in the spare tire well. Anyone have anything similar?

Welcome to the ORG. Your best bet is to do a search like this one. Sounds like the weatherstripping and/or taillights are leaking. Check out the posting by Daniel Martin in the second search result. Dan was a former ORG member and an encyclopedia of information on troubleshooting.

I had water in my spare tire well for long time until I found that the rubber gasket around one of my taillights was torn. Replacing it solved my problem.

Good luck!

take the spare out... and check for a little rubber stopper thing, if that isnt in there that could be the reason for your leak... of course i think its a drain plug but you never know.

My '99SE had been wrecked before I bought it and I had a hell of a time getting my trunk to quit leaking. Sources you might try are the rear window seal, the sealer around the tailights, and the body weld seams. Also had a Toyota GTS that rusted in the wheel wells and spashed water up into the trunk when driving.
You might try dusting some baking soda in areas you suspect might be leaking. Then you can see the track in the baking soda that the water made which will lead you to the leak.
Good luck.

Find someone you trust, grab a flashlight, and climb into the trunk. Have your 'helper'(you know, that person you trust to eventually let you back out!) hose down different parts of the rear as you check for leaks from the inside. Worked for me!
