Is there a way to make the gauge lights brighter

If the dashlights are getting dimmer (even with the switch set to full bright), you may have a weak battery... If not you could
buy 3 packs of PIAA SuperPlasma H-92 (That's 6 but only need 5). At about $15+ a pair... but they are much brighter (5watt) than the stock ones. The color is WHITE not blue (like the bulb itself).

If all your dash lights are dim, but other interior lights are OK, you likely have a bad dimmer switch, bad ground in dash, a loose, or a corroded connection somewhere in the circuit. If you have ever messed with dash, you may have loosened a connection.
New bulbs probably will not work, unless putting them in fixes bad connection.
Try the old "take it apart and put it back together" trick. Maybe that will fix it.

Scroll down to Single/4 LED Wedge Base Bulbs. They replace 194 bulbs. The kind in your gauge cluster.

I just had a bulb go out on my '98 SE and I replaced it with a Sylvania #74 that you get at Auto Zone or Checker (you should tighten the metal contacts in the socket with a jewler's screwdriver for a perfect fit), or even Wal-Mart. Save time and money and put it in yourself.
Also, if you want the "bulb condom" as was suggested, you can find an assortment of "vaccuum caps" that are small enough to slide on as a sleeve, coming in several colors, at Auto Zone for $3.99 - These should resist the heat put out by th bulb, and come in yellow, red, blue, and white. You may need to modify some for size, but they are a cheap alternative to colored bulbs.
