Problem with 97 maxima *pic*
Hey guys. My brother has a 1997 maxima SE. He told me his engine is making a whining noise. So i told him to bring it over and ill take a peek. Well today he said the noise is gone.. so hmm. I looked and i cant tell but is he missing a belt? Heres a pic of it.. should there be a belt on that pulley? If so, what is that pulley for?
thanks guys
thanks guys
There doesn't need to be a belt going across that pulley because there is one going underneath it. What I mean is, the pulley that you circled is a tensioner, which pushes DOWN on a belt going underneath it. I think that is what you were asking?

If that belt were missing, the Battery light would be on on the dash and the car would run out of juice pretty quickly....That's the Alternator belt, among other things...
alternator
I have a 97SE as well...I had the same whining sound for a week or so before, 1. windows were real slow goin up and down 2. windshield wipers very slow 3. lights dim 4. the car just DIED...there was a recall on the alternators for your year. I didnt know either untill I brought it into the dealership. there are several threads about this, heres one http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=190557 Good Luck!
