Not happy with mechanic

The mechanic I took my 95 to to get an engine swap has no love for his job, no passion for cars, nothing. When I called him up to find out how my new engine looks, he just said "fine". When I asked him if I could keep the old block, he immediately said, "Why?" in a gruff tone, and just couldn't care less about my car. Personally I beleive that a mechanic who doesn't love working on cars is useless.

Has anyone ever compiled a "good mechanic" list to put in the FAQs or something? Maybe it'll be worthwhile, because I'm really about this.

If anyone knows of a good mechanic that loves Maximas in the metrowest/Worcester area of Massachusetts, let me know.

His indifference could also mean that a Maxima isn't a nice car to him, and engine swaps are boring.

Maybe he usually works on Porches and Ferrari's or something, and have 25 years expeience building cars by hand.....

Or maybe he is disgruntled about his job and doesn't care about his work. Or maybe he is a Honda owner and has Maxima envy.

That would be me , But I have yet to do an engine swap on any car yet. Check the stickied post in the NE forums under the installer's list for the stuff that I can do.

He won't let you have the old block because it's worth some money.

Yeah, that bastard. I'm also going to make sure that there really IS "severe engine damage", cuz if not I'm getting my money back.

Sweet, you're close to me (I'm in Worcester). You got the job I might have some things coming up in the near future.

Seriously though, if people give me the names and locations of the mechanics that they go to and trust, I'll put it on my webspace and we'll all have a reference for when we need it.

I'm sure the car will be running when I get it back, but I'm not sure if he'll do the little details that a good mechanic would, like keep the plugs from the old engine (1 month old), change the fuel filter, change the oil, change the belts, put my new crank and camshaft sensors on from the old engine etc. etc. I wish this state didn't have stupid laws that prohibit people from being in the shop when the car is worked on, or else I'd spend the day chilling in there.

Dude Keep It

Keep your old block, That VQ is Valuable man, you can put it on display in a framed clear box and show your Kids the best V6 of its time and many many other times also. Also You can take your engine and transmiison and swap that into a differnt car, Maybe it could fit in a old Altima. Go to a differnt Mechanic, this one sounds evil and will probaly do something wrong, if the Mechanic shows no passion its like hes dead, just like a racer, if he doesnt want to race he will loose.
