value of 260,000 mile Maxima SE
I have a 1997 Maxima SE. Pearl white/tan leather, auto, bose. I bought it new and now have right at 260,000 miles on it. I don't really have a need for this car anymore and now I am thinking of getting rid of it(choking up garage space). What the heck is a car like this worth?

The Max held up very well. I ran Mobile 1 engine oil and trans oil from day one. Did all the major services and changed the oil religously. Replaced Trans at 205,000 miles with a new one. Both CV axles, alternator, starter, radiator new in the last 25,000 miles.
Those values seem kind of high to me. I'd be tickled pink to get any of the figures you guys mentioned. Does anyone know of an actual sale price of a max with similar mileage.

i saw a lot of maximas before buy this one and the average was lik 8,000-7,000 of course depending the miliage but was like 100,000 miles.

Realistically consumers wont fork out more than 3 or 4 grand for a car with 250,000+ miles on it. The reason why? They can get a car a couple years older with half the mileage for the same price. Most consumers dont buy cars they think may break down in the next 30,000 miles. And although i think maximas are good for tons of mileage, you'd have a hard time convincing someone to write you a 6 grand check for a car they may think will only last 3-6 more months before a major repair.

it also depends on where you live....

yeah, no way it's up at 5-6 grand. maybe 3k? KBB is not accurate at all alot of the time - sometimes the price barely changes with milage (e.g. supras, 300zxtt's, etc.)

I think there's a certain point at which KBB stops deducting for high mileage. There's no way a Max with 260k on it is going to sell for that much.
Why not make the thing sit in the driveway and use it as a beater?

I think it would sum up around 2.5k to 3.5k max. If I were you, and money is not an issue, I would just donate the car and get a tax deduction for it. They usually give you a KBB value for your receipt.

Thanks for the responses guys. I haven't decided yet what to do with the car.
I'll decide in the next couple months. I like the donation idea if I could get KBB value for the tax deduction. Otherwise somewhere around $2500-3000 is what I was thinking. I'll let you know what happens. I'm gonna wait till the 04 Max hits the showrooms here and see if they are going to be worth it, maybe I'll just trade for a new model.

1. While they "give" you KBB value for atax deduction, the amount of cash this puts in your pocket is tax rate times the value of the car.
2. You won't see any cash unless you itemize your deductions. If you take the standard deduction, you won't see anything from giving the car away.
* I've never actually done this, but that's my understanding of how it works. If anyone out there with a tax background can correct it, please do.
