PLEASE HELP: my odometer only sometimes counts miles...

the odometer on the i30 i purchased about 8 months ago isnt working anymore. it was fine for about 2,000 miles, but i recently noticed that something is wrong. a 300 mile road trip only put 7 miles on the car. a couple weeks worth of everyday driving only shows 200 miles. it almost seemed as if it was only counting miles in reverse or something wacky like that, but a backwards spin around my block didnt move the counter at all. i thought maybe it was a loose wire or something, so i reconnected all of the wire harnesses under the hood- still to no avail. if anyone has any ideas or suggestions i would really really appreciate it. thanks.
