ACT clutch is crazzzzzzzzzzy....no more breakin period
ACT clutch is crazzzzzzzzzzy....no more breakin period
925 miles on my street modified clutch.
Alright so I REALLY ripped my 1-2 shift earlier today. Man my car jumped in the air. The wheels spun at first and then I got ALOT of wheelhop. Not sure I liked the wheelhop too much, makes me feel like my car is falling apart.
Anyways I am not sure if I am happy with the clutch as of right now. The shift was rough as hell and I am not sure if that is my fault or the clutch's. I can only believe that the way my car handled the shift today would hurt my 1/4 mile time.
Somebody fill me in on whether or not this happens to them when they shift with this clutch....
and if you have the ACT let me know if you like it on the poll...

its going to get more harsh and smooth shifts will take more effort, but at worst it will sustain your 1/4 mile time, but should help it. i think you just have to get used to driving it hard, the clutch grabs like mad, and thats why your getting such a rough ride, just work on it some more and the problem should take care of its self

Are you saying that your car is more difficult to shift after having installed the ACT clutch? As in moving the shift lever into another gear is more difficult than before? If so, that has nothing to do with the clutch. Either your hydraulic clutch system needs to be bled, the clutch pedal needs to be adjusted, or there's a problem internal to the transmission (ie incorrect-spec transmission fluid, etc).
Regarding your difficulty launching the car, yes the ACT clutch grabs much better than the original clutch, so YOU need to adjust your driving technique to adjust for the new clutch. You need to come off the clutch easier with more finesse and adjust how you work the gas as well. You will readjust your style eventually...took me about a week or so. I have no problems whatsoever now. Your clutch is fine...just need to change your technique to compensate. Getting back to your shifting difficulty, if your problem is jerkiness getting into the next gear and not the shift itself, then this too is simply driving technique that you'll have to adjust to compensate for the grabbier ACT clutch.

i see what you are saying in the second paragraph...but I am so used to just hitting the clutch in real fast changing gears and taking it out...
it feels like if I feather it or whatever it might take me awhile to get the power back to the ground.
i am also thinking the paragraph above could be me talking nonsense and I might just have to get used to it like you said.
Who knows, I'll have to play around wit it.
will bushings help eliminate wheel hop?

Listen to the man, he's got a good point. It took me quite a while to get used to the ACT clutch. Keep at it and sooner or later, you'll get the hang of it.

dont do that to your tranny, like he said above you will break your tranny and it is a very expensive fix trust me on that one.
I didnt know you had an ACT clutch. I have ACTs on both of my cars

I love my act, my car chirps 3rd so nice. I know my car is faster but i havent gone to the track, my car has lots of wheel hop too, but i still like my clutch. but my car still goes threw gears smooth.
hey so you guys with the ACT...you think that the ACT can help your 1/4 mile time???...i dont understand the purpose of why i got one if i cant shift fast without breaking my tranny...
man i guess i just gotta practice but its been too wet here lately...
chirping third??? is that bad for the tranny?
im thinking what you gotta do is take the 1-2 with more effort to not be rough about it and then go for the 2-3 as fast as possible...

I've placed my order for my ACT already, I can't wait to get it. I have a few questions:
1) With my cheapo clutch now, I can move without touching the gas pedal. This is a great thing for bumper to bumper traffic. Will I still be able to do this w/the act? I know sometimes I have let off the clutch to hastily (without giving any gas) and the car almost died, how much leeway will the ACT give me?
2) Is the 5spd tranny strong enough to hold the occassional downshift and hard upshift here and there with the act street disk and 8psi of SC boost? (76k on the tranny) I know when I do it now the car feels like it's getting ripped apart, I don't wan't to hurt the car too much. When I say occassionally, I mean a couple hard downshifts/upshifts here and there a day. Some days I won't ever downshift aggressively, but i'm always upshifting spiritedly. Becuase downshifting, from 5-2 @43mph for example, seems to put a lot more stress on the tranny then upshifts.
SprintMax, please don't reply.

My ACT clutch was great after I learned to shift very gently out of first when I wasn't racing it, otherwise I would get a very low growl that sounded like wheel hop almost. Otherwise after it broke in I have been very pleased with it. Quicker shifts, and in theory better 1/4 mi times can be achieved, also, you probably shouldn't "chirp" your gears, it will result in damage to the tranny over time.

ok i have a ACT Street Disk 2 and i got alot of chatter still but got use 2 it
. for the wheel hope i got the place racing mounts got them for 263 shipped. it helped out alot but i still get some but not a bad. and the street disk sucks for taffic lol. casue the chatter and then the mounts i got car shakes alot. ova all i love the setup car graps gear great. i still haven't brought it 2 the track. i think it will improve times casue my clutch was brun lol. i can spin 1st,2un,3rd. once i spun 2nd gear for 10 car lenghs
. i shifted out of 1st at 3,000rpm gave it gas until 5,000rpms and poped the clutch in 2nd. i drive my car hard with 142,000 facorty trans etc. its doing pretty go. plus when i go to the track my foot neva gets off the gas just clutch in and out thats how i got my 15.2 stock lol. o ya and i got redline gear oil that helped me on my smooth shifting threw gears.

i'm feeling you diffinitly. dont use your breaks. just downshift all the time. you be in good shape. just couple nick and scratches here and there thats nothing......
Oh make sure you get big spoiler in back of your car , so this way you air born for couple second after you let of the first gear. you might be able to do the move in grand theft auto III try to jump cars,. it would be amazing when you do that with act clutch......... Jumping cars...
Put it this way- when I had the OEM clutch, I went to the drag strip once to 2 times a week. I did donuts, reverse burnouts, pretty much crazy stuff. The transmission NEVER failed on me at all, and this was for 2 years.
Then, I put in an ACT clutch. Within TWO weeks, I blew out 2nd gear. After that I had the tranny cryogenically treated. It took another year for me to blow out 3rd gear. I then put a non-cryo'd 3rd gear in and that also blew within 2 months. I also had a Quaife differential, but that really shouldnt affect things too much seeing as the VSLD also came in pretty much the same tranny. The sudden and hard impact of the transmission shifting sends huge shockwaves thru the transmission. It can't take the stress.
There was also a thread about who has blown gears so far, and out of all of them each person had a aftermarket clutch. NOBODY (that I know of) blew the transmission with the OEM clutch.
I said screw it with the ACT clutch and threw it away.
My take on it- unless you're pushing over 300 HP, dont worry bout these expensive clutches that clamp hard. I now have a $120 Exedy clutch thats OEM replacement. It does not chatter, it does not moo or make funny noises. I'm VERY satisfied with my $120 Exedy clutch (exedy makes the OEM one btw). Last night I was racing a Hyundai, and I hit 2nd gear and it spun like no tomorrow, so it is able to grab too.

I say you dont need clutch all you have to do is, POWER SHIFT> its much faster and effective.

Alright so I went out tonight to see if I could get a hang of my clutch. after 15-20 runs I figured out...
1. I seriously doubt that I will be able to do my 1-2 shift as fast and well as with the OEM clutch. I used to just shift as fast as possible pop the clutch and go...now I find myself shifting the stick slower(because I am concentrating on letting the clutch out smoothly) and then when I let out the clutch the tires ALWAYS chirp and if I try to do it quickly I'll get wheelhop.
2. I can chirp third. Is that mad for my tranny?
3. At this point I wish that I stuck with my OEM clutch.....but we will see how the 1/4 mile times are when I go racing this Friday.

- Dude, you got the six-puck clutch, didn't you? Ouch. I had the ACT six-puck on my car for exactly one week - then I redid the whole thing with the ACT street disc. Kinda needed to since the shop who did the six-puck install didn't properly resurface the flywheel... but that's another story entirely.
- That six-puck has the potential to destroy your drivetrain. Think about it this way: power goes from engine through the transmission, then through the halfshafts, then to the wheels. On top of that, your engine mounts are holding the engine in place. So, when you transmit a sudden burst of power through the drivetrain (ie, dropping the clutch from a high rpm), something has to give...
You could:
1. Slip the clutch (OEM ones are sometimes designed to be weak enough to slip so that the rest of the drivetrain is protected from the force - Honda S2000's are like this. Your six-puck will not spin.)
2. Blow an engine mount
3. Break something inside the transaxle
4. Break a halfshaft (said to be pretty strong, but they're just so darn thin)
5. Break the tires loose (no big deal - just don't make too much noise around cops if you want to avoid a ticket)
- Any time you put a big shock on the drivetrain, those components that I just listed take all the force. In lower gears (1st and 2nd), where you can break the tires loose, its not so bad - the power just escapes through spinning the wheels. But try to think about where that energy is being absorbed when the tires aren't able to break loose.
- And that is why I got rid of my six-puck clutch. It is NOT suitable for street driving.
- Also, your 1/4 mile times aren't going to improve significantly, if at all with ANY clutch... as long as whatever clutch you're using can withstand the full force of the engine without slipping. You simply need a clutch to hold the power down. A clutch will not determine how quickly you are able to shift - your synchros and shifter do.
- If I were you, I would seriously consider getting rid of that thing. It is possible to drive around with a puck clutch, but you are putting a great deal of stress on the drivetrain and I guarantee that your girlfriend hates it.
Good luck with your decision.

This is exactly why I don't the ACT. I don't the chatter, vibration, nor the extreme grab on the shifts. The OEM clutch is plenty strong for me. I've got 93K+ miles with lots of 1/4 passes and it's never slipped once. It doesn't grab like it use to, but it doesn't slip and will chirp 2nd. I'll take the smoothness and peace of mind running with the strong OEM clutch.
The wheelhop and massive spinning on the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 people describe makes my cringe. Think about it. The hop and spin means that your car is transmitting a ton of torque to drivetrain instantly. This is where you break engine mounts, differentials, gears, and axles. I suggest that if you have an ACT, don't slam the gears.
