2 races tonight.. super happy fun time, 2 wins, 740i and a4 1.8

as i am leavin work, a coworker of mine (parents bought him an 02 audi a4 1.8t) keeps buggin me to race him, i have been declining for 6 mos, as my transmission was dying. finally, i decided to give it a go, but its an audi, it should walk me, right? (my car is 96 GLE auto w/ a homemade "special" intake) we pull up to a light, and he keeps revving and blowing off, while i brake torque to 2000 rpm... light goes green, i peel for 10- 12 feet, and am ahead by half a car, pulling slowly away.. around 60 mph, i really start walking away... wow! so we hit the freeway onramp, he is behind me through the curve, i let him get a bit ahead on the freeway, them proceed to reel him in and pass him at about 130 (6200 - 6400 rpm in 3rd, o/d off) he can't gain, no matter what he is trying... we slow back to about 80, he jumps again, once i get out of my 75-90 flat spot i start walking right by again... a good few runs, i am liking my new intake... the rest of my drive home is pretty uneventful, until someone with hid's is tailgating me.. at the next light, the car pulls up next to me, and the guy gives it a chirp off the line, so again i brake torque (to gather rpm's, opened up intakes NEED it to be competetive off the line) and slowly reel in and pass him around 65-75 mph.. next light, brake torque again, this time i am ready for him when the light turns green, 3/4 a car off the line, and graduate to about a car by 80.. my friend in the car behind me says i was racing a 3-4 year old bmw 740i i am impressed with my new intake design, seems to really liven up the car- my only mods are my custom intake, sticky tires, and a 2500 mile old auto tranny with trickshift fluid in it.. anyone else ever run agains those cars? before the intake i got walked by the audi off the line, and was even at a roll... he said that he launched at 4000...

are you saying you beat a standard 2k2 1.8T?
if so your friend has some serious shifting problems....hehe
if he can't take a max off the line with this 4wd quattro system...something is definitely wrong...lol
nevertheless...good kill...its not due to the intake tho
an intake is good for 5-7hp at most i'd think, so its nothing significant to pull like that.
wish i got to race as often

press down the brake pedal with your left foot, and rev the car with your right foot on the gas.
then lift the brake while mashing the gas into the floor

brake torqueing... press hard on the brake, press on the gas to get rpm's to about 2k rpm (no higher, or it'll just smoke) (the rpm varies car to car, with 17's or larger, dont bother you will just break your car, axle, etc) when launching, simultaneously let off brake and feather gas to maintain traction- my quick-on-the-strip reaction time helped me too, but he jumped the first few feet, but when i got traction i took him hard, he knows how to drive the car, used to beat me off the line, and hold even on the freeway- it totally negates the loss of LOW END torque from aftermarket intakes... try it some time, and post your personal results on here. i assumed a lot of people did it, its the best way to race an auto (it IS destructive though!!! and bad on tires!)

also, on a flowbench, my new intake flowed a proven 17% over HAI intake with midpipe, so i am getting more than 5-6 hp from it-
the design is patent pending from another family project, and i decided to adapt it to my max. i will post pictures when the patent is complete, and possibly market it to the maxima community. if anyone wants to know about the basic theory behind it, go ahead and ask- it ALSO gives more usable rpm, the stock intake had a bit too much low end, and was hard to get traction, by removing that, and bumping the torque up 1-1.5k rpm, it puts it smack dab into the "i have traction now lets go" range

im not trying to pick on you, and i hope you the best with your intake and patenting.

but if an HAI gives 6hp, a 17% increase would yeild an extra hp.
making it 7hp total.

im sure yours has good gains, i was just using the normal intakes as an example with 6hp.

its not so much the added 1 hp, its the 17% increased CFM that i get, effectively bumping the powerband to a more usable range, much in the way the MEVI does for top end

stock audi 1.8t's are slow, ESPECIALLY with quattro. They weigh a lot and their 4 cylinder engine's don't really have the torque for good off the line speed.

good kill on the 740 though, I'm not sure how much that thing weighs, but its a 4.0 liter v8

Another thing is that its pretty hard to launch a awd, inexperience drivers many time bogg their engine trying to launch a awd (thats why many S4 don't do too well on the track) but if one gets a good launch that would make a big difference.
Wonder why the 740i lost to you though, i thought they would be faster.
Good kill...

i had the feeling that if the 740 went to 120ish it woulda started pullin - i was personally impressed because i had never fared THAT well against that audi, he used to be about even with me, and 15.8 is kinda hard to believe- it looked like he got a good launch, bucause it never bogged down, the headlights never dipped down

while im here, do they make a 6spd audi a4 thats NOT awd? i have never seen one... i race my friend's 01 golf 1.8t modded all the time, and usually do pretty good... (if he was running sticky slicks he'd waste me though ) but i have noticed that the maxima is particularly strong around 50-70mph, where it tapers, then comes back around 95 mph...

Modded S4s are pretty fast in the 1/4. As for the Audi 1.8T, I would have assumed for all that money the car would be faster then that. Your home made intake, thats a good mod to have, at midrange speed your car will pick up a bit faster. Never the less keep it safe dont be trying to kill no one, good runs.

my dad just bought a new TT 225hp. It is the convertible and pretty heavy. it has ZERO low end, and with the quatro, it will NEVER peel out. but once the turbo winds up, it is FAST! i still think the max is faster though. i dont think he will race me tho.

i am not impressed with the TT engine overall, but the overall car and looks... mmmmmmmmmmm......

My boss has a BMW 735i and it is a dog off the line. He said that the 740i is considerably faster, but none of the 700 series (save the 750i V12) were ever designed for drag racing...they are all geared really low to accomodate the autobahn in Germany...his 735 can cruise at a leasurely 150mph all day long with plenty of extra umph for "passing". I'm not surprised about the 740i at all...if you had ventured past 100mph he would have dusted your ***.

they do not all come with AWD. that is an option on both the A4 and A6. plus the new A4 conv. comes only in FWD

Are golf 1.8t's fast? They have 150hp stock. What has your friend done to make it a tough race for you. Even if you have just an intake and y-pipe you'll have over 200hp at the crank.
What is he doing to gain 40-50 hp?
The 96 SE maxima is only 100lbs more than the 01 golf.
Maybe I'm just ignorant but when have volkswagon cars been fast until this new W8 passat?

I guess you're probably right.
The car we're really going to have to look out for (even the new 04 maxima) is the new GTP that will be running 260hp and 280tq. Instead of the 240hp they run now.
And that new GTO has monstrous power. The mustangs and camaros better look out.
