Tire Time... Toyo Proxes TPT?

Hit a pothole on the freeway @ ~85mph yesterday that resulted in a "compression split" of the sidewall. Now there's a real purty goose-egg-sized bump on the sidewall that, I'm told, will continue to get bigger until it eventually pops. So, as many here have done, I went tire shopping via various online sites (Tire Rack, 1010Tire, Car Review, etc.) and settled on the Toyo Proxes TPT. I have the OEM 15" rims on my GLE so the tires end up being pretty cheap ($85 each). I was just curious if anyone else here has these tires and if so, how do you like 'em?

Most ORGers recommend the Dunlop Sport A2 and the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 for use with OEM size rims.

I had the RE950s and loved them.

i did do some research on the Dunlops but nixed them for a couple of reasons: more road noise (max is noisy enuf as it is!), short tread life (<<<<40K mi by just about every reviewer), and no mileage warranty. The Toyo's come with a 65K mile treadlife warranty and a 30 day ride guarantee (if i hate 'em, they take 'em back). Plus, they were $10 cheaper per tire and had similar reviews to the Dunlops. Never looked at the Potenzas tho...

I got over 50k miles out of the 950s that I had.

Just FYI

Ive had the TPT's on for about a year. They wear pretty well, even though ive had 2 replaced for free cause of a torn sidewall and i hit a pothole too and had a giant bubble in it. But overall they are great tires, and not too loud on the highway.

Thanks for the reply. Have you had the chance to drive them in the snow?

darned near *anything* has got to be better than my current bfg comp t/a's - they are absolutely horrible in the snow and not too much better in the rain... i'll be super happy to see them go

thanks for the reply.

I was going to buy some tires soon and only the front ones becuase my rear ones are perfectly fine. I was going to get wider tires, 215-60-15, on my stick steelies. I wanted to kow if that would be alright? I have 205-65-15 in the back. Should that be fine, or if I have different kind of tires in the front than in the back will the ride be rough.

i had the TPTs on my max before i sold it, and i really liked those tires. aside from a bunch of burnouts, the tires seemed to wear pretty well. they were silent, and stuck pretty damn well. i would buy them again.

Got the tires slapped on last night in less than 20 mins at a great shop here in Reading, PA: TJ's Tire and Automotive. Guys were cool, competant, and f-a-s-t. Anywho, for both tires, including old tire disposal, lifetime balancing, yadda yadda, it cost $182 - not awesome, but not horrible either.

Had the chance to drive them home in the sleet/rain and they seemed to hold quite nicely. Can't wait to get rid of the other two comp t/a's on the rear...

Cheers,

Tof
