I went with 225/55. I chose 225/55 because you get more contact patch and you don't lose any side wall. I think 225/55 on stock rims look kinda funny cuz the wheel wells in the max are kinda big. 225/50 may be more responsive though.

I am also pondering this question as I am getting ready to replace the 215/55/16 tires on my 95 Max SE, which is equipped with 97 5 star SE rims.
My car is lowered with B&G's so the 225/50/16's won't give me pronounced "wheel gap". I know I'll have better handling with the 50 aspect tires, yet my daily roundtrip commute involves 70 miles of highway driving and I'm leary of shortening the sidewall and making the ride rougher than it needs to be. (I'm leaning toward Sumitomo HTR+'s in this size)
My understanding is that the 225/55/16 actually decreases the acceleration and makes the car feel "larger". I'm not sure whether 225/55's will fit since the car is lowered.
Anyone wish to make a recommendation?

damn, how low is your car?? And no, it does not decrease acceleration, it'll throw off your speedo a hair, yes. But my friend ran consistent 15.1's with those (kumhos) all day long with a STOCK maxima. You car must really be slammed though to not fit 55-series tires

Either way, dont expect any drastic differences. Any differences are most likely felt through the brand of tire, not the size. I think the 225 width tire looks funny becasue the rim is only 6.5 inches wide, which makes the tire look like it's bulging out of the rim.

Welp, I just threw on the HTR+'s in 225/50/16, and so far I love em...brake response is great, but I haven't really been able to tell how they stick considering its a little wet....Wheel gap, however....I'll let you's decide

the wheel wells look a little funky. Too much space in my opion.
I have the same question though. I have a '95 GXE 5 speed with stock nasty *** 205/65R15 tires on them. What can I upgrade to without messing up the speedo?

Jamsan,
Time for lowering springs! Now, I understand why those who have gone to 225/50/16's without lowering their cars feel there is too much wheel gap. I suspect the wheel gap appears even more noticeable when standing 5 ft away from the car. I'd highly recommend B&G's (very comfortable riding for a lowering spring) This will significantly improve the vehicle's stance and provide flatter cornering.

Your damn right it is! Already starting to save up for either some H+R's or the Eibach Pro Kit...I REALLY had my heart set on waiting for the Tein S-Tech springs, but they aren't going to be available until the summer, and this will not hold over with me for another 4 months...maybe I'll get used to it ?

I ordered Ecsta 711's from the TireRack recently and had them installed. Been on for ~3 weeks. So far so good. They handle quite well although don't quite have the response of my previous BFG KDWS, but they still feel quite good. Drove them in a cold rainstorm recently (~40 deg, rainy) and they seemed to do alright. Still too soon to really tell how good they are, but all the signs are positive thus far.
And for ~$220, how can I complain? That is C-H-E-A-P!
